I agree, as does the 'Not in our name' message from the Imams and Mosques re those would be EDL bombers.

I am still convinced that the vast majority of people worldwide are decent human beings; and every sector has it share of extremists and nutters.

So this lot behave as tens of thousands of young people do all across the country by raising money for worthy causes. But it seems they have to be given special mention because they are Muslims, with the implication that it is unusual for Muslims to behave in that way.

It's a funny old world.

They have been mentioned because it is a mosque local to me, in the local newspaper. The same newspaper reports on 'knitting for Jesus' groups (Christians who knit jumpers and so on for third world orphanages); the good works of the Salvation Army who raise money for their homeless hostels; the Hindu festival in the park (open to all, great fun) and so on.

I chose to highlight this particular story because of the very bad press associated with Muslims at the moment. It is refreshing to see the activities of a Mosque reported in a positive way.

The actions of a community say more about it than words, and if these guys want to stand for an Islam that cherishes human life and pursues human flourishing, that's admirable. The world would be a far better place if more muslims did the same.

I think the point is that we see so many negative stories about young Muslim men that it's sometimes easy to forget that just like everyone else, they are almost all exactly like the rest of us.

SP, almost all? This is one small group. I wouldn't knock anyone for helping charity, but let's not go overboard. If this wasn't unusual it wouldn't be newsworthy.

It's not that unusual, the unusual thing is a positive slant that the press have decided to put on it on this occasion. I could give you a huge list of things one of the Mosques in Sparkhill have done because they usually ask for support locally and our family have property in that neighbourhood, it just never gets reported because they go about things without a lot of fuss.

Off the top of my head I recall them helping out with Alzheimers Research, Muslim Aid, Cancer research, Hospital Transport service, Air Ambulance and a local charity whose name I can't remember but it organises day trips, entertainment and short breaks for the elderly in the area. I know these are a fact because I was personally spoken to about them, but if you google all you get is the Birmingham bomb plot, which pretty much agrees with what we were all saying that the press don't report much positive about Muslims. If you're not satisfied to take my word for it and want links I'll give them a call later and ask them if they have a list of things their members are currently helping with.

Oh, I don't need to be satisfied - but it would be nice to see some verifiable information on all of that, so a phone call from you wouldn't go amiss. You would be doing them a service. As I said, credit where credit is due.

Having read all about the 'charity' racket at the Finsbury Park Mosque I'd be worried about where my money was going to end up.
