i don't like incomers, grockles, this was from a Cornishman some time back, to some Welsh people i met, who didn't care for any English people, and indeed from some English to their neighbours of a different hue, its sometimes low level, but it's there, a distrust of difference, and you will find it in every part of the globe. The Americans are a hodge podge of peoples, but that doesn't stop the black American from disliking his Hispanic neighbour, because of his ethnicity, so just how do you think this will work itself out one day, sorry to say it won't. We could all be coffee coloured, and some will complain that person's complexion is just a bit darker, welcome to the real world. I think it's idealistic to think that any country accepts everyone, that multiculturism, and indeed multi faith works, because for the most part right across the globe, it doesn't,
look at the Sunni v Shia, the Catholic v Protestant, the Jew and Christian, any old excuse, be it colour, ethnicity, religion, or just you don't like their face.

People can be tolerant and mistrustful of strangers and of difference, thats for sure - a hangover of tribalism,most often expressed from sports club affiliations or nationalism nowadays - but attitudes change.
Certainly I see far more evidence of particularly racial tolerance than I do overt racism nowadays, which is a good thing.Show society is growing up.

I think culture has more to do with ‘racism’ than race.

I’m willing to bet that most people who are otherwise averse to other races wouldn’t object if, say, a wealthy and highly qualified doctor moved in next door – and I can’t imagine most red-blooded males would kick a Singapore Airlines girl out of bed because of her colour.

I've always held (well at least in the past couple of decades), that we are light years in front of many countries I've been to.
These results confirm that by and large (leaving aside some of the more troglodyte elements which exist the world over), we're not that racist.
Also - we produce the best music.

Well least *overtly* racist in that the research was just by questionaire.
I should think we've probably one of the lowest domestic violence rates too if the research is done by asking 'do you beat your partner?'
But it still means something - it means that the message that it's not OK to be racist is at least sinking in and that's something to be pleased about

And I also think it is not a matter of racism but cultural differences.
To have someone of a different race living next to one could cause problems not because of their colour or race but because of the culture they bring with them, which could become very alien to one's own.
I for one hate loud music disturbing my otherwise peaceful surrounds, especially such music as Rap, and it wouldn't matter if those turning up the volume happened to be black or white.
But knowing 'black culture' seems to have a constant liking for music and dance take sp1814's regular referral to music, being such an example in this post /// "Also - we produce the best music" ///.
Therefore it is on a cultural basis alone that I would prefer not to have a black person living next to me, and not because of the colour of their skin.

Wouldn't like myself it if a neighbour played Schubert lieder all day, however loud, if I could hear it. Aog,do you find culture offensive or difficult to accept if it is not to your taste? Do you think it natural for us to dislike or feel unease at Schubert, Wagner, Thelonius Monk, or Bob Marley performances ?
