@ Octavius - If you are going to berate people for expressing a view on a chatsite, you are going to be berating everyone for evermore. There can be no argument from anyone, atheist or zealous fundamentalist, that this specific practice, raised by Mikey in this thread, derives its authenticity from religious belief - a belief that basically everything is the...
I don't think that this man is stupid, per se, just ignorant and socially programmed. Female genital 'circumcision' is vile, no two ways about it, but I don't think that a belief in God is the crux of the problem. It is, once again, man's misinterpretation of God's word or, many centuries ago, some disturbed man's misuse of religion for his own ends.
If he had to go through the agonies I mentioned on the other thread about FGM, regarding the life threatening problems of childbirth for these girls, he might feel differently.
//It is, once again, man's misinterpretation of God's word //
Actually it isn't misinterpretation of his God's word. His God specifically forbids altering 'his' creation. It's the word of this man's prophet, Mohammed. No interpretation necessary.
just google the subject and see the results as there are different forms of mutilation from clitorectomies to cutting off everything and letting the labia heal together to weld the whole area bar a large meatus for pee and monthlies.
All forms of this practice are horrendous.
How do I know about this - a friend of mine is a Dr in Anthropology, practices women's rights and issues as well as cross-cultural training for the likes of British Airways - and she is Iranian by origin, spared that ignominy as she was a Christian-Persian.
//Some 1,700 women and girls were treated by specialist FGM clinics but this masks a bigger problem says the NSPCC.//
I'd like to know why there haven't been at least 1,700 prosecutions for these crimes. These are ones we do know about,
Instead there have been just 3 (failed) prosecutions in the 27 years since this procedure was criminalised in the UK.
As you say mikey - seeing *rses like this offering such drivel as an excuse for barbarism is a powerful argument for atheism.
Within the context of the teachings of his own religion though, there are various hadiths that promote "female circumcision". and the koran does not forbid it - that seems all that is needed for the mullahs to declare it necessary.
God save us all from those who want to force gods word on all of us....
I think calling him the stupidest man on the planet is letting him off lightly. What he advocates is so gross, so unbelievably cruel, unbearable in fact. Stuff of nightmares.
LG, actually the Koran forbids altering God's creation - so in effect it does forbid it - but many Muslims seem to ignore that bit, preferring instead to follow Mohammed's advice.
@ Naomi - Ahh. Perhaps they feel it is because the koran does not explicitly forbid such practices then.
I have read a couple of apologist muslim sites, trying to make an argument for female circumcision, which are all without exception unmitigated drivel, and all seem to rely on these hadiths and a lack of an explicit "no" from within the Koran...
Then they whine that the term " Female Genital Mutilation" is only used by islamophobes.....
I don’t think anyone need be an Islamophobe to find this barbaric practice utterly repugnant. The Koran doesn’t specifically forbid it – in fact it doesn’t mention circumcision at all – for men or for women. It does, however, specifically forbid altering God’s creation. Since all Muslim men are circumcised, the allegedly infallible Mohammed’s subsequent instructions were clearly an afterthought to his previous literary efforts.
