Folliculitis? Sore Scalp
4 Answers
For months now I've suffered from a sore, itchy scalp. It feels like someone has been pulling my hair. I've got shoulder length hair and if I tie it back it just seems to exacerbate the problem. I also get what can only describe as acne on my scalp. A few months ago I got a friend to check a very painful area on the crown of my head and she saw what she described as 'boils' - these areas were red and swollen and had a yellow head in the centre. I can't check my scalp myself but I can feel small red bumps which are very sore when I feel around. There are times when I've got my mum to check a sore area and she says there's nothing there - and when I went to the doc she checked my scalp and couldn't see anything though I had lots and lots of thick, long hair so it's impossible to check the full head. She prescribed Nizoral and I've been using it around once a week for months now. It usually helps with the itching but it hasn't 'cured' whatever's going on. Sometimes it's not too bad on the itch and spot front - kinda manageable - but it can really flare up and get quite bad and I just feel like washing it to get some relief. I try and just stick to washing it every second day though. Anyone any idea if it's folliculitis? Or does it sound like something else? I know that folliculitis can lead to hair loss so that wouldn't be nice.

I would go back to the doctor. I was prescribed Nizoral for a similar sort of thing years ago and it turned out to be impetigo, (caught from my son!) I am not saying that this is what you have, but from what your friend saw I would think it was some sort of skin infection that needs treating properly.
