Rossett Acre school in Harrogate have given parents the option to allow their 4/5 year old girls to wear jogging bottoms rather than skirts/pinafore dresses to school due to the amount of physical activities the kids engage in.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/10167327/School-criticised-for-allowing-children-to-wear-jogging-bottoms.html

Is this a good idea or a lowering or standards.

After reading the article, it seems pretty reasonable to me.

By the way - this is pretty funny. The Telegraph accurately reports:

"School criticised for allowing children to wear jogging bottoms"

The Daily Mail however, has:

"Primary school orders girls to wear 'Vicky Pollard'-style jogging bottoms instead of skirts"

Love it...

Why not go the whole "hogg" and let them come to school in their pyjamas (like some of their mothers)

Slovenly?.....yes.
Disrespectful.....probably
Lowering the standards .....certainly.

Sounds about right.
Great idea....

Skirts are non practical for young kids. It will save a lot of grazed knees as well.

Non story. Slow news day.

As usual with these daft right wing articles, it is better to read the last paragraphs first.

// "We therefore advised parents that reception children, both boys and girls, should wear jogging bottoms during the school day.

"This is our preference and therefore it was stated in our school prospectus.

"However, we did state at our recent new starters parent's evening and on our open days for reception children, that if parents preferred to send their child in a dress or skirt, they were at liberty to do so." //

Surely Chris McGovern, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education should be making better use of his time than commenting on daft stuff like this.
Hows about going Greek & have the boys wearing skirts ?

WR.
Surely boys engage in a similar level of physical activity (probably more) yet they wear trousers.
Why can't the girls simply wear trousers?
Matt - It's for boys and girls and only for reception.
that is what i thought they should all wear regulation school trousers, track bottoms, not really
Whats wrong with bringing your PE in a bag that your mum made for you
My girls would never dream of wearing trousers.
In London, Hill House School, for children from 4, used to only admit boys, and the uniform was of knickerbockers, not short trousers. When they got around to admitting girls they insisted that the girls wore knickerbockers. That's the attitude! Only much later did they allow girls to wear skirts.
Good idea. Trousers should be compulsory if a school has a uniform in my opinion and skirts should be forbidden. Not jogging bottoms though please.

Girls abuse school rules and skirts worn just below the crotch are just not acceptable!! ;o)

I'm thinking that 3/4 year olds probably do more physical activities than older kids, and therefore it probably makes more sense for them to wear casual trackie bottoms rather than trousers...otherwise they would have to bring a change to school. Wouldn't kids of that age wearing trousers to play would go through quite a few pairs in a school year?
Actually I agree the tots would all be better off in jogging bottoms or shorts (in this weather)

I hate seeing little children in formal looking uniforms (or little boys in suits at weddings for that matter). Kids need to be comfortable whatever age they are, comfort is condusive to learning, and most school uniforms are not comfortable
why are they suddenly "Vicky Pollard" style and not, for instance, "Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson" style? I would have thought that joggers for the littlies were a very good idea. much easier to get up and down when going to the loo and better for activities.

Sqad... you get more like AOG every day.....
In my day boys wore shorts as the cost of holes in trouser knees were not desirable. Shorts/skirts, can't see what the fuss is about. Cooler than jogging bottoms any day.
Skirts are not comfortable in this weather. Your legs end up sticking together...
And many tracksuit bottoms look like trousers now.
sounds like an excellent idea to me. Five-year-olds don't need to wear ballgowns. Much less grief for parents if they've got jogging bottoms to wear out at the knees, rather than trousers (or for that matter, the knees themselves).

Why?

It's true.
