Very sad loss.

The NTNN sketch in which Mel played a trendy vicar heckled by Rowan Atkinson was absolutely wonderful.

I know Mel lived life 'to the full' as they say - but gone too soon.

just learned about this

one of my favourites from the 80's & 90's

an immense loss to British comedy, RIP
I adored you Mel, RIP my friend.
blimey thats a bit of shock to see that!!!!
Very sad. A very funny man with a great talent. RIP.
That is sad news, rest in peace Mel.

a brilliant director, aswell as an actor
Thats really sad, I loved him in th 80s, thanks 4 letting me know. X
sorry to learn that. rip.
Shocked to hear this. He never looked the fittest or healthiest individual, but to die at 60 is young by anyones standards.

Saddened, too. Very good comedian, especially in his head to heads with Gryff Rhys-Jones, and part of a groundbreaking team with NtNN....
Just seen this post and didn't know. Very sad news. I used to love Not The Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith and Jones.

RIP Mel x
I'm sorry to hear that news. He was a very funny comedian.
I just read this and thought, "It can't be THAT Mel Smith!" Got goosepimples now. Just doesn't seem possible. All best wishes to his friends and family.
Perhaps a few decent repeats will appear on our screens now, for a change.
I loved this sketch from NTNON which I posted on here at Christmas - best ever and so memorable! Mel will be a sad loss to comedy, we have loads of NTNON videos.

Very sad to hear this - a sad loss to entertainment. We've grown older together, as it were...

Griff:-

“I still can’t believe this has happened. To everybody who ever met him, Mel was a force for life.

“He had a relish for it that seemed utterly inexhaustible.”

“He inspired love and utter loyalty and he gave it in return. I will look back on the days working with him as some of the funniest times that I have ever spent.

“We probably enjoyed ourselves far too much, but we had a rollercoaster of a ride along the way.”
rip....remember him back in the Not The Nine O'Clock News days.
wasn't he so dead pan?
just brilliant, fond memories
