He's obviously a man of principle.
So disgusted by the ethical standards of the U.S he's fled to live in one of the most corrupt and vile regimes in the world. Right on comrade!

I met a number of expats in the USSR in the 80s and not one of them was enamoured with their lives and these included extreme lefties.
Things may have changed since then but not all that much judging by what I have read and according to a few people I have spoken to during the last couple of years. Russians are suspicious of all foreigners and especially
traitors. They believe they might be double agents.

I wonder did the recent American whistle blowers gave any thought to the consequences for themselves of their actions? One is facing a lifetime in prison and the other exile.

He's only got a year so far. M Depardieu got citizenship for life without even asking, but then he's a fat, fawning thespian. The Kremlin are likely to be a lot more suspicious of someone like Snowden. Hang on to him to annoy America but maybe have him one day start to poke his nose into stuff with his new Human Rights buddies in the country. Decisions decisions :-)

Strictly speaking they aren't "Reds" (Communists) now. They haven't been since 1990.
if they have given him a Russian passport it seems they have given him asysum ? I am sure he will probably be happier there than spending his time in an American prison,but he no longer has the great land of his birth. A worthy swap ?

Probably not.
He is a long way from his family. He would have preferred Cuba obviously. Not sure what would be stopping him from boarding a merchant vessel and booking a ticket to Cuba.

The Russians plainly want to see if they can get some sort of a deal out of the US over Snowden, but I doubt if they'll want him on a permanent basis.
Someone mentioned Litvinenko: Snowden might well reflect on that and be glad that he's not a traitor to the FSB/SVR.
