I don't know why these massively long sentences puzzle people.

You look at the crimes he's committed, tot up the tariffs, and arrive at a number. - If it's 1000 its 1000. How else should it be done?

What's really pointless is to try and factor in a load of unknowns such as how long he might be expected to live.
