With a report button and more vigilant staff, will Twitter become just another bland social networking site?

There will be a film next - "Wolf the Troll slayer". I think that the word Troll covers too many types of persons - there are funny troll who are good humoured and mischievous but at the other extreme and there are nasty trolls. I suppose it is a balancing act between free speech and making sure people do not feel threatened by comments aimed at them.

So you think sites that don't allow threats of rape, racism and abusive language are bland?
Question Author
If all tweets are about shopping, then yes, it will be bland and boring!
well I don't bother with these sites but I don't see how de trolling will mean it will become a shopping chat site. I think it's a good idea, just get rid of the small percentage of trolls and the rest can use the site for what it is intended for.

Too many sensitive people join these sites, they need to be more streetwise.

The trolls bring them back to reality.
Threat of rape and death....racism and abuse is your idea of reality, Jude?

You are coming across as a disturbed person in this thread....
"Too many sensitive people join these sites"

sounds just like AB
Stopping these idiots is important but policing it will be made much more difficult by many people reporting tweets that are just harmless fun or valid opinions.

Also, I'm sure many males also get twitter abuse yet for some reason this is not newsworthy.
Jobs for Mark Rae and Mick Talbot then?
Question Author
Baz, they seem more mature on AB, although I've seen a few get hysterical when they can't get their own way.
There is an enormous difference between 'I don't agree with that all, you must be an idiot' and 'You're so wrong I'm going to come to your house and kill you'.

Personally I prefer - I don't with what you have said because.......

That's the problem, kids make these threats on the streets every day. Wouldn't it be easier to ban immature sensitive women from Twitter.
Some of the women in the news re trolling are mature, professional women who are neither silly nor immature.

This woman's nightmare is directly due to Twitter trolling

Very amusing, do you think, Jude?
There can be no defence for people who post death threats or threats of rape Jude. Twitter is not insulated from real life; Go around making threats to murder someone, or plant a bomb, or threaten to rape them would certainly be worthy of investigation and maybe more; Why do you think that these immature rage-filled morons, incapable of making a point without employing a threat, deserve any special protection?

And your last post is just blatant victim-blaming. Do you really think that women like Prof.Mary Beard, or Stella Creasey MP, or Caroline Criado Perez are "immature sensitive women"? And its not just them; There are hundreds of women who are routinely subjected to such malicious and odious threats, for no other reason that they are women, or that they have argued in favour of equality for women.

Attempting to defend such morons that employ such vile threats whilst at the same time attempting to switch the blame to the "sensitive women" carries a strong whiff of mysogyny with it. As does this non-argument that we must protect the rights or cretins to abuse and bully and harass and intimidate people because to attempt to regulate it threatens free speech and promises a bland, airbrushed future.

The principle of free speech does not, whatever you think, give you the right to say whatever the hell you like, to whoever you like, whenever you want to say it. With rights come responsibilities - something these cretins cannot even begin to comprehend, it would seem.

No man worthy of the descriptor would countenance this sort of vile garbage, spewed from the impotent minds of rage- fuelled cretins.

But its supposed to be a "bland networking site" what ever that is. there is no need to insult anyone.
I have a Twitter account, but only tweet once in a blue moon. I follow 10 or so people and never see any trouble.

I did make some comments during the London riots showing I did not approve of the rioters and did get a lot of abusive replies. That's not what its for, certainly at my age,68. So I read what others say.now.
if you mean that it will catch those who post death threats and rape threats then i am all for it. bland it won't be, but safer one would hope.
Good I'm glad they have. With freedom of speech comes the responsibility to behave in ways that don't threaten or alarm the innocent. I have had a stalker (who actually wasn't that threatening so didn't really bother me) but my mother has a group of women at the moment harrassing her on her Facebook account because of her boyfriend and has had to set it to private, when it's been a public profile for years without any fuss. People shouldn't have to put up with these anti-social trolls. I'm all for freedom of speech but there are limits and the latest rape / threats to kill things on Twitter do need dealing with otherwise it becomes okay to say them there, then it's okay to say them in the street or to someone's face then it's okay to act on them. These people have nothing important to say, they're just moronic little thugs. It would never end if they were allowed to prevail.
it happens on AB so why not on any other site..
