It doesn't seem like a terrible thing to me at any rate or a sign of bad parenting.

Sqad, it wouldn't be safe for 12 to 14 year-old boys to camp overnight, not with all those 12 to 14 year-old girls about.
We don't know for certain whether anybody camped overnight to get a glimpse of Bill Haley, but do you think none, given the opportunity, the need, and the means to do so, would not have done? The mid-1950s were different in lots of ways from the present, economically and technologically, inter alia.

/// AOG - My boy is off to the Reading fest today. I trust he will behave in a manner that I find acceptable :-) ///
Don't take this to be rude in anyway, but surely it all depends on what you find acceptable yourself.
Apart from that, you know what they say?
"While the cats away the mice will play" :0)
