...that there wasn't a 'dangerous batch' in circulation, but that all drugs were potentially lethal. While that's probably true would he not have been better warning of the type of drugs that were killing people rather than taking a swipe at drugs in general?

Always sad when people die unnecessarily, but when will they learn that taking illegal, and now legal highs, drugs is a mugs game.
From what I've heard in Police canteens, officers (certainly the more seasoned one's) are generally pleased when when a bad batch of drugs hits the area as it generally removes the miscreants who beg, borrow, steal, cajole and burgle in order to get their fix and crime of the type mentioned generally takes a dip for a month or two at least.
If the pattern of this spate doesn't identify one particular substance, then he was telling no more than the truth.
