Considerations are afoot that could mean all cars would have their speed limited automatically depending on the speed limit in force.

Early trials found the systems to be highly reliable technically and could cut accidents by nearlly 30%

Good thing? Bad thing ? or Good if it works?

Or should we be permitted to break the law?

I am not interested in "laws" handed down from an unelected corrupt power mad organisation.

I live in england was born in england and expect to be governed from england
Lorries and some minibusehave been fitted with speed limiters for years, it seems to work fine for them, I would not want IG on my car though.
It would lead to an increase of tailgating which would lead to more accidents.
Could also be very dangerous in bad weather / snow / ice if your car automatically brakes sharply to readjust the speed of your vehicle according to the change in limit.
I'm guessing this would not apply to motorbikes.
^^^
Why not?
It would play havoc with gears / gear changes.
So we all end up travelling at the speed of the tractor in front

As we do now? Until there's room to pass?
Motorbikes?

Can you imagine being on two wheels, when something over which you have no control suddenly applies your brakes??

OMG !!

There would be absolute carnage.
There would be dead bikers littered around every speed limit sign.

:0(
It will lead to huge traffic jams, because all vehicles WON'T be travelling at exactly the same speed, there will be slight differences and the faster vehicle will want to overtake the slower one. See how long it takes one truck to pass another since they were limited to 85 kph. And see the queue of cars all trying to get into the outside lane to overtake them.

It'll just take a whole lot longer to pass, and that can be very dangerous on some roads - I give you the single carriageway sections of the A9 as an example.

I'd suggest it's kite flying and will be quietly forgotten.

But... but... you do have control over your speed. Stick to the speed limits and nobody will apply your brakes but you. Or am I somehow reading this wrong?
Should this happen I can see it being so unpopular that the sales of new cars would fall through the floor. Can't see the Germans standing for that.
jno ...

The penalty for breaking the speed limit is currently a fine and points.

The penalty would become injury and death.

You seem to be saying that bikers who break the speed limit deserve what they get ... even if that is being killed.

Actually, maybe the Government thinks that bikers are expendable. Encourage them to use small, economical, fuel efficient two wheeled transport ... and then kill them.
Don't know if it would be a good or bad idea, but why are cars built that can do excess of 100 mph ?
"Can't see the Germans standing for that"

Interesting point in that German roads are faster, so would they have different settings? And if they drove their cars over to the Uk would it be a right kerfuffle.
People who deserve to die ...

Mass murderers

People who kill children

Motorists who ignore speed limit signs

It's like reading the Daily Mail, lol
Anyone on a motorbike!
speed is not the cause of most accidents anyway. Speed seems to have become the target and the holy grail to solve all motoring ills. If the idea is road safety then there are huge areas of indemic bad driving to address first. Eg those eejits doing 50 on the motorway forcing all the trucks into the middle lane to get past. That is much more dangerouse that someone doing 85. They should have a minimum limit too.
It would solve the population problem.

We'd all be dead.
