When are they to learn that not one person can be trusted in that 'hell hole' of a country, and that we should withdraw all our troops and any other aid, and leave them to fight amongst themselves?

I agree we should withdraw the troops. But we should go much further and offer safe sanctuary to any Afghani who wants to come and live in peace and freedom.

Ah so very charitable of you Sandy, but how would we know who were the ones who want to come and live in peace?

We might just be increasing the ranks of the 'enemy within'.
I certainly think we should be offering a safe haven to the Afghan interpreters - all of whom are know to the armed forces, so there'd be no misunderstandings there.
Agree with aog although "allowing the enemy within" to enter our country without fear of our weak justice system is probably already happening.

I wouldn't rule it out, there have been Afghanistan police officers who have turned on and killed our troops.

/// He was well-known to the men there, the inquest heard, and was known to be “pro-Isaf (International Security Assistance Force)” and a “champion of the partnership” with the coalition. ///

/// The man, known as Gul Agha, had been laughing and joking with soldiers at the checkpoint before he turned his AK-47 on them. ///
I'd argue that local police officers are not the same as the screened interpreters who have been in the direct employ of the Army.

Maybe I am being a little cynical, but what better employment could an insurgent possibly obtain than to become an interpretor for the enemy.

The US and UK have important plans for Afghanistan, which involve isolating Iran and bypassing Russia to run an oil pipeline right through Afghanistan, meaning we could bring out Central Asian oil more easily and cheaply down through the Pakistan coast.

Afghanistan is sitting on one of the world's biggest lithium deposits, worth $1 trillion.

Lithium is used in everything from batteries and electronic components, to nuclear fusion processes, to alloys and military applications.

The West absolutely cannot afford to have control of the resource fall into the wrong hands.

...and let's not even mention the protection of the poppy fields...which are cultivated for opium production.
Does anyone think we go to war for purely altruistic reasons?

Were they U.S. soldiers or mercenaries from Blackwater ( or whatever it is called today)?

Surely it matters little whether they were or not, it is still three lives.

Anyway the Guardian described them as soldiers in their headline, and surely it is not for the Guardian to lie???????

/// Three US soldiers killed by member of Afghan forces ///

Educate yourself on why we are in Afghanistan.
The Chinese are quietly and without violence buying up the land and rights to access all the mineral deposits there, just as they are around the rest of the world; Africa, Canada and South America. Few seem to realise the extent of this private, legitimate expansionism going on while our forces are shedding blood for nothing.

And how would one do that pray?

Speak to the Western politicians, (we have been told numerous reasons)

Speak to the Afghan politicians (they have their own reason for us being there.

Read the Right -Wing papers, read the Left-Wing papers (they both have their own slant on the subject.

Go out and speak to the Afghan civilians, if you could understand them they would most likely all have their own individual thoughts on the subject.

So which method has sp1814 chosen to educate himself, may I ask?
