Well I suppose it is no surprise given the left leaning of this site.
But what may well surprise the lefties is that I personally dont agree with the kiss and tell books, no matter what political persuasion. This man was a spin doctor aka a 'liar or twister of the truth' to the rest of us, rather looks clear he is out to make a fast buck at the expense of Brown.
And does anyone actually think this is isolated to Brown or labour? I don't.

I see little evidence that this site is "left- leaning". Quite the opposite, in fact, which probably means that overall it is pretty balanced :)
I would agree with the rest of your post though - spin doctors tend to the amoral, and no party has a monopoly on them. The tories have their own in Lynden Crosby, and who can forget Andy Coulsen?

Based upon his non-attendance at the HoP, it seems to me that Brown has been a pretty pathetic constituency MP ever since losing the election. His sporadic and infrequent attendance surely does his constituents no favours and smacks very much of hurt pride, probably mixed with a burning desire not to face up to all the jeers and jokes at his expense. But politicians should have a thick skin, and his actions prior to the election and as an PM point to him being a rather brooding control freak with little control over his temper and a very thin skin.
Given all that, I can see why he would not want to attend the conference, but it does beg the question of what he is contributing to the labour party and his constituency right now.

Why no questions on D. McBride, from the left?
First and most obvious - you don't stab members of your own side in the back.
Second - it's not our job. In order to comply with the above law of gentlemanly conduct, it has to be for the followers of all the other parties to observe and criticise the spin doctors belonging to a particular party.
Thirdly, in the case of me, personally (can't speak for anyone else), McBride is a sideshow and I've not paid paid much attention to his exploits, so I don't feel in a position to comment.
If I denigrate spin doctors at all, I do it en masse and use sweeping generalisms rather than single out individuals.
(Except, perhaps, when I'm making fun of Alistair Campbell's compulsion to appear on television at least every four days).

Does anyone still believe that one shade of politician is inherently more morally upstanding than the other? Sadly I think they do bless them, despite all evidence to the contrary.
I might find this book interesting, but I wouldn't dream of buying it for fear of putting more money into McBride's pocket.

"Insidious machinations, Svejk? Really? The reason this is not quite so high on the general publics radar is that it is of most interest to the chattering classes, the media and the politicians. Certainly the headlines being offered tell us nothing substantively new, or is likely to change anyones opinions about who they plan to vote for markedly.
Spin Doctors are amoral and machiavellian, always seeking an edge and careless of the ethical dimension. They are not restricted to one segment of the political class - left, right, centre - they all use them. So the "polit bureau" nonsense just makes you sound rather - paranoid :)
