The school near me the 6th formers have to wear suits and ties. School rules.

Any school is entitled to establish, and then enforce some basic rules regarding the dress code for its pupils.

That is what is occuring here.

Any attempts to blow it into a religion / race issue are wide of the mark.
I can't see the problem. Headmaster lays down the school rules and pupils must conform to them. Surely those rules must apply to ALL. There's a case at the minute on the BBC news site - Wales, ( sorry don't know how to do a link on the iPad). Boy shaves his head for charity ??? school doesn't allow shaved heads. Mother is kicking up a stink. I wasn't allowed jewellery, rolled up sleeves ( yes really), duffle coat or white socks. If we tried we were sent home. Not a problem. This case is nothing to do with religion. Just people stirring up religious hatred AGAIN.
another school has banned a girl (shose brother is in the military) from wearing a Help for Heroes wristband. I suppose the same arguments apply.

I don't understand what is wrong with just abiding by school rules. All this pandering and alluding to religious hatred gets on my wick, don't like the rules - go to a different school.
Why Roman Catholics don't like beards...

Of course. If it's against the uniform rules she shouldn't wear it.
I might just be saying that because of my hatred of little girls who support charities though.
Gromit, I do have views on this debate, but it is way too early for me to start debating. What you have done though, is made me want to watch all the Monty Python films again. (Ssshh, I'm a woman too...!)
Gromit, it is not nonsense. These boys haven’t grown beards because they fancy growing beards. See what their relative had to say.

Hair growing on the face is natural and unstoppable. Deciding to shave it off or not should be a personal decision.

I often have a number 2 haircut in summer, and any rule that bans it should be ignored because it is unreasonable.
This is getting a bit boring now. Some people obviously don't respect rules and guidelines, and just want to stir things up. It's Friday, think I'll follow a lighter thread!
//Schoolboy, 13, sent home on first day of new term after being told his short haircut was offensive

Kyle McGeever made it two hours into his academic year at John Henry Newman Catholic College in Birmingham //

Why is it always Catholic schools in these stories?
Sounds like a right little pr1ck! And his mum!
Quote - It is the second time the teenager has been in trouble over his hair. Last year he was forced to study alone for a week when he modelled himself on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following gromits argument to it's logical conclusion, children should be allowed to have any haircut , wear as much jewellery and whatever clothes, they like. Would he be happy to see them arrive still in their pyjamas and slippers? There is no reason why schools shouldn't have rules and regulations and if they have a policy regarding hirsute pupils then it should be obeyed.

Can't help wondering if any of the teachers have beards?
Our Geography Teacher sported a fine one
She was a right Dragon!
Gromit asks : Why is it always Catholic schools in these stories?
Probably because their standards are quite high, would be my guess.
When my kids started upper school they had to sign a contract of behaviour and this covered uniform/hairsyles/jewellery/make up etc.
Ditto Ummmm
Actually, the parents have to sign as well.
I'm happy with a uniform dress code. It is people telling other people how to groom that I object to. Especially as it seems arbitary like banning short hair.
