One Third Of Shoppers Walk Away From Self Service Tills

you get two thirds of the way through scanning, then the system says "Authorisati on Required". So you stand there like a lemon for up to 5mn. when no-one arrives (which is common) what are you supposed to do? I've got a life, I haven't got time for Tesco to decide whether they're going to help me. Of course I walk.

I normally use them but if there's a serviced till without anyone in it I'll use that instead. I'll also use a serviced till if I've got some kind of discount vouchers I'm using or meal deal I'm buying because these often cause trouble at the tills with things not registering, and I want a check-out person to handle it.

I hate them.
Their main purpose is to train us to do the job of the checkout staff. Once the percentage of "self scanners" is high enough, the supermarkets can make a significant proportion of their checkout staff redundant.
Every time you self scan, you are helping to do checkout workers out of a job. It's not the most exciting job in the supermarket, but it's what a lot of people do to earn a living.
Stop taking their jobs.
Fight back against the self scanners.
Tell the supermarkets ... we are not going to let them crap on their workforce, even if they do disguise it as "quick and convenient"
If supermarkets want the checkout process to be quicker and more convenient, they should give jobs to more checkout staff, rather than trying to put their existing ones out of work.

Next we will be advised to treat ourselves at the doctors and dentist .This type of thing has to be discouraged .Self assessment in income tax was the start of it .We need to be attended at such places .Petrol another self service .We are becoming a nation of gadget controlled people .Would not have got this at the corner shop .

People leave their shopping and walk away. If you have a couple of items then they are fine, if you have lots of stuff/alcohol/medicines etc. forget it!
Morrison's tills have the annoying habit of saying "Please put the item in the bagging area!" before you have time to do it, then a harassed assistant is running themselves ragged trying to help everyone!

Well I use them. I used them abroad too when working there although if you forget to press English you have to follow carefully what it is jabbing away at you in French!
I doubt 'normal' tills will disappear in the near future. If you have a trolly load then it takes too long.
I think they are great for quick shops, no longer having to wait while someone shops for a legion when you just want a sandwich (including the old basket only' or wait while some old biddy searches for all those elusive 1p's.
