£25,000 compensation for being detained for 23 days extra, that's almost £1,087 per day.
One wouldn't be paid this amount if one was forced to do 23 days hard labour, how ridiculous are things coming to?

baz, the law is not specific to "these people". It applies to all of us. Much of the award was for the egregious behaviour of those who have power over us and abuse it; exemplary damages. We all have the right to seek satisfaction and deterrence: that applies whether we are mass murderers, or people pushing bikes through Downing Street, or anyone else.
Appreciate it was an unacceptable treatment but there is a need to be proportionate. Shows how much I knew of the law, I thought a judge couldn't use large compensation payments to achieve punishment. In any event it is one heck of a daily rate and one can not reasonably conclude that, in the end, the guy gained far more financially than many might think reasonable; compared with what folk earn in their job for example.
Surely the criminal should not end up better off, financially, for having committed his crime than for not doing so? You can't be incarcerated for 23 days too many unless you're incarcerated in the first place. Surely there should be no 'rewards' for such things happening?
Similarly, by all means dish out a financial penalty to the relevant department for c&^king things up, to encourage them to get it right next time but put the fine back into some other part of the public purse, don't just give it to the convict!
Apparently, he was kept inside due to concerns over his mental health. I am concerned about this country's mental health, reading about stuff like this.

"We all have the right"
sorry, this bloke was an illegal, a convicted thief , he should not be getting a penny for anything.
If as has been said that its more to with TM ignoring the court then its even more ridiculous, it smacks of petty personal grievance.
if she must be fined, then give it to charity over here anything would be more deserving than this scumag
theres going to be alot of older people not able to keep warm in a few weeks, give it to them, there must be a million things that would be better served by getting this money...but not this scum.
you can pretty it up all you like any which way but there is no justification for letting it go to him
