Labour still ahead, Libs in the doldrums, along with UKIP. When are the Tories going to make that spurt that they need ? Will they leave it until the final lap, like Mo did at the Olympics ?

I think there was more of an atmosphere of enterprise and self-reliance, Fred. People were encouraged to believe that they were responsible for supporting themselves and that the State was not there to cater for their every whim. As I said, different times.

And Mrs T sold that idea, several times, to the public, NJ, in spite of obvious difficulties? We'd better blame Blair then.Must say I hadn't noticed a spirit of self reliance or entrepreneurship in the general population under Mrs T. But what I did notice was a feeling that things would get better; she engendered a spirit of optimism, which may have been a false spirit or it may not, but she had the purposeful manner and a certain charisma to create it.
