Its not true that I don't understand what you have been saying naomi....I just don't agree !
I still maintain that Comps have provided the best education, for the most amount of people for nearly three generations. The kids that would have went to Grammar schools have still done well, as most of the Grammars became Comps in name only...they retained their superior premises, equipment, and their Teachers. Comps didn't bring the average education opportunities down for bright kids...they raised them for the not-so bright kids.
My point about more kids going on to College and University after the Comp changeover is irrefutable. In the 50's only about 20% of school leavers went to college...now, in 2013, we should see the figure break 50% for the fist time. An improvement that is difficult to see happening without Comps. You will see from my post, that the Secondary Modern I attended in the 1960's didn't even do A levels !

There's a caveat, isn't there mikey about figures for university attendance? 50% plus attending what now called a university now is not the same as 50% attending what was a university in the past; the likes of Oxford, Cambridge, London, Bristol, Manchester, would not have been open to the mass of that 50 per cent because 1) the degree course was in one subject (PPE and old Greats excepted) and that required a certain academic rigour 2) the intellectual and academic requirements were very high. Neither applies to the mass of universities and the degree courses created since those times.
mikey

Miraculous.....more than double the number of pupils clever enough to go to University .........and of course it shows......;-)
