That must've been a very bad day...

And in answer to my question, I think it has to be a big fat 'yes'.

But what do you think? Do you think he may have simply been teasing the kids or being as un-PC as he could, in order to get a rise out of them?

I don't believe this was a one off---bad day. Teachers should not express their personal opinions out side the guidelines as set out in the curriculum.
Politics, religion and history can be tricky at times . At times you can ask the pupils to give their opinions from your neutral facts.
I don't know what a ''long career '' means and we don't know if there had been other incidents but if it was correctly reported then it was the right decision.

The first bit about Hitler could have been an attempt to provoke debate , but the other remarks mark him as unsuitable to be anywhere near a school.

I agree with andy-hughes he should have been psychologically evaluated and the appropriate action taken.
