No

they won't remain in the UK

But if the Scots can leave the UK and claim 'their oil'

then surely the Orkney/Shetland Islanders (who are ethnically and culturally more scandinavian anyway)

can leave Scotland

and claim 'their oil'?

Perhaps they should organise a Referendum?
2sp is correct, including that the referendum is not a choice between David Cameron and Alex Salmond. Once independence comes about there will be a whole new political scene with no more ties and/or vested interests between Scottish and UK Conservatives, Labour and LibDems. The people of Scotland will be choosing between "staying together" and tracking the rest of the UK in everything or separating with aspirations of doing better than the UK. Many feel that, for better or worse on a number of fronts, Scotland running its own affairs would be preferable. The collective sentiment will be clear within just over 11 months - the importance of a good turnout is in any case obvious.
There is no legislation in the works that could allow Orkney/Shetland to remain part of UK should Scotland get independence so only available answer to question is: No, Orkney/Shetland is & will remain part of Scotland
Look their all half Norwegian already, really lovely folks.
