47% want a lenient sentence and 35 per cent believe the marine should receive a full life sentence for his crime.
/// Support for a more lenient sentence was highest among the over 55s, with more than half of those aged 55-64 saying that the law should make an exception for a serving soldier. Among the over 65s, some 55 per cent would support leniency. ///
It would be interesting to see a vote taken of amongst those who have actually served in Afghanistan, it is only those who know what pressures are involved when you fight those who do not wear any uniform of recognition.

There is no poll but you can get a feeling for the perspective of service personnel by looking on ARRSE.

He was already "taken out" by having been captured. Shooting him in cold blood, as clearly happened, is a War Crime, as Marine A knew. Under those circumstances he should be punished. If you behave in the same way as terrorist killers what exactly makes you different from them? That they started it? No, we should try to set an example. Others might not follow it, but we should try all the same. Shame on you, then, baz, not those who brought this to light.
I commented previously in Mikey's thread as follows:
In my opinion it's not just murder, it's virtually treason. To hand such a situation to our enemies who can use it as propaganda is at total odds to what this soldier was employed to do. They should give him the maximum sentence possible.
I have no reason to change my stance.

I'm not being naive by any means. I doubt evil people think much of what we do anyway, their leaders would certainly put out propaganda anyway. That's what happens in War. Doesn't stop it being wrong to shoot a prisoner. Their role was not one of judge, jury and executioner as soon as he was captured. In the heat of battle, people die and there's nothing to be done about that. But this was not in the heat of battle and a law was broken. It's therefore our responsibility to uphold that law.
some of just dont get it
these filth dont respect anybody elses view lives etc etc theyll kill anybody anyhow, women children etc etc.
they only understand violence, to show them respect etc is seen by them as a weakness.
you think patching the bloke up and sending him back would get some sort of credit from these people....dream on
he'd be trying to kill our troops us as soon he possibly could

the only shame is that the marine will have to serve a prison sentence for doing our armed forces a favour.
doing what he did proves why our forces are some of the best the world has
theyll be laughing themselves stupid that we will imprison him for doing what they wouldnt think twice about doing and thats before they start mutilating the body and dragging it around the streets.
