Lord Carey - "the Church Of England Will Extinct In One Generation"
Hyperbole or prophecy?

What can the CofE do to attract more young people?
Is it's problem that it's outdated? Or that it's trying to be too 'modern'?
Or something else?

replace communion wafers with crystal meth like the Methodists? (Well, okay, one Methodist.)

The Church of England might be on the wane, but the 'Happy Clappy Born Again' flavours of Christianity are not - and personally I think they are far more dangerous. The CofE is greedy and is pricing itself out of the market. Many village churches struggle to pay the stipend the church requires - and of those that haven't been obliged to close their doors, a good number are now maintained, at least in part, by the Historic Churches Trust.
Douglas, I think Cliff is one of the Happy Clappy brigade.

in the past as now the CofE has alongside it's affiliates done lots of good,
i am not so much defending them, but its wrong to suggest that everything it does and has done is wrong.
sp Catholic church has an awful lot to answer for, ignoring the plight of children's physical and sexual abuse by its staff is just one.
The Womens Institute does good, as do many Christian charities, so let us not tar them all with the same brush. I would like churches not in use now for worship be used as drop in centres for those in need, there are plenty of other reasons to keep them running. Many are beautiful buildings notwithstanding, so to close, pull them down would be a terrible shame.

emmie; // if Islam becomes the dominant religion, as i believe it will in time ...// I think you should get this into perspective, in the 2011 census 59.5% of the UK population stated that they were "Christian" and only 4.4% Muslim, http:// en.wiki pedia.o rg/wiki /Religi on_in_t he_Unit ed_King dom
The important question to ask is 'How many of the population are religious at all?' If ALL the Christians were to forsake their religion and if a small number converted to Islam, it would still only mean a very small amount within the overall population, it's not as if the UK is ever going to be dominated by Muslims, and you can add to this the fact that many young Muslims are, with education, giving up practicing the religion of their parents.

Thats as may be naomi but read Khandro above...it isn't going to happen.
I wish people would put religion into context. Hardly anyone in Britain practises the religion that they say they support. During the Census in 2011 I spent 6 weeks helping people who hadn't filled in their forms, mainly due to ignorance and/or laziness. When it came to the religion question, almost everybody said " well, Christian I suppose, but I never go to church"
We here on AB spend a disproportionately amount of time discussing religion, and I include myself here. But in reality, its just not important enough for the vast amount of British people to show any interest whatsoever. I have a friend who is a Church in Wales vicar, who has a regular congregation of less than 20 people at the so-called popular 10:30 service every Sunday. This is a well-to-do middle class suburb of Cardiff. On Easter Sunday, there might 40 people there. There are more people going to B+Q on a Sunday morning.
At 4.4% Muslims have a long way to go before they even match Christian worshipers, let alone "take over"

SP, Maybe not. Hopefully our wicked western ways will prove to be a good influence.
Mikey, I wish people would put religion into context too. You're saying there are very few Christian worshippers, but the same can't be said for Islamic worshippers. As a religion, Islam cannot be compared to Christianity. Islam is not simply a religion - it is a complete way of life. 4.4% Muslim now - but the birth rate among Muslims vastly outstrips that of the indigenous population and of the non-Muslim immigrant population - and current figures exclude births to British-born second-generation migrants, so it is not entirely inconceivable that the Muslims population will one day outnumber the rest. Don't be complacent - do the maths.

I am perfectly capable of doing the maths involved.
It is highly unlikely that Muslims will out-number non-Muslims in Britain. I would go further and say that it is a near impossibility. But Sharia Law has an even lesser chance of becoming law in Britain. Religions mostly attract non-educated people. The future generations of Muslims are unlikely to be as pious as their mostly indifferently educated parents and grandparents. They will have been brought up in a Western civilization, not in poverty, in a third-world country. Just like Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism, religion will largely be used for ceremonial purposes, like weddings and funerals. My friend the Anglican Vicar might only have a paltry few to her church services, mostly elderly ladies in shapeless hats and sensible shoes, but dozens attend the weddings and funerals that she officiates at.
How many white, Anglo-Saxon people get married in a church, rather than in a Registry Office, just because the wedding photos look so much nicer ? Most of these people will never step into another church until they enter one, many years later, in a coffin. Hypocrites, all of them.
This continual talk of Muslims outnumbering others here in Britain is just xenophobic scaremongering, bordering on something more sinister. You are obviously an educated person Naomi, judging by all your posts and you should therefore know better.

Islam is a way of life for the devout, but so is Judaism. And in both, few adopt it, the young less so than their ancestors, though nearly all would say that they are Muslim or Jewish if asked.
The maths don't suggest that Islam will ever dominate Britain; just how high would the birth rate among Muslims have to be to so outstrip the non-Muslim population's birth rate such that that happened?
