Unsurprisingly here have been some pictures of JKO posted on Facebook today. I'm a tad too young to appreciate her style and impact on the women of the world at the time but have always known her described as a style icon.
The pictures collated by The Vintage Festival show a truly attractive woman, who has not been doctored with surgery, Botox, teeth whitening/straightening, etc. She has a natural and timeless beauty and style that transcends the decades.
I often look at old photos and am surprised at how old a young woman could look and in my view it is even worse with the men of years gone by.
Do you think we look younger today than our age group would have done 50 yrs ago? And if so what do you think the secret elixir is?

I do think we have become younger and less staid and set by social decree about what girls, young ladies, wives, mothers and grandmothers should wear, look like and behave.

She was a stunning, handsome lady.
However, I do wonder how long it took her team to get her to look like that?
No, not sour grapes, it's just that as she was in the public eye, there would be folk to groom her appearance.
I do think we look younger today and I agree with Minty about the food, and not as hard working circumstances.
Although I have seen a few 30 and 40 ish year olds looking much older than they should for their years recently.

My mum looks young for her age but I was recently looking at my nan in a photograph, she was bouncing me on her knee when I was a baby and she would have been about the age that I am now. She looked very much older than I do now, mind you there are some people I know and I'm shocked when I find out they are younger than me, I think they look very much older.
Do we think that young people looked older then? I think that if we do so it's because of factors influencing us to do so. The pictures were taken about fifty years ago (OLD); there are lots of B/W ones (OLD); those automobiles we see are now classed as "vintage" (OLD); the clothing and hair styles are way out of date (OLD); and, when we look back at history, well, that's just (OLD).
People are living longer now, attitudes have changed too. I remember my mother telling me that when she turned 40, she felt her life was mostly gone and she should sit in a corner from then on, in a twinset and pearls. That was how it was then - in the late 1940s/50s - then the youth era of the sixties came and it all changed. None of us in our sixties or older think we're old (well, I don't) - my mum lived to 94 so if that's my yardstick, I hope I've still got a third of my life still to come.
If you look at photos of post-war young men and women, they all dressed like older people, all very much of the same mould. You don't see that today. Medicine and healthcare has improved so we live longer, generally are better off than our grandparents, and want to live interesting lives - that keeps us younger in spirit!
