Just watching on the news, they're saying it's a police helicopter.

Hopefully no fatalities.

It is clearly a police 'copter. It appears that the pub was a single storey building. Wonder if the 'copter was already in difficulty to have hit such a low building.

It probably just dropped like a stone. They are not like a fix wing aircraft that can glide down.

Exactly the reason I have never wanted to fly in one.

Considering the eye witness reports from local residents it is a miracle if the casualties are restricted to the immediate site of the crash. Apparently there was no fire engulfing the 'copter.

No explosion thankfully, which is a small blessing.

For what it worth, if I were unlucky enough to befall either I'd take a chopper crash any day, more chance of survival.

Makes me wonder if there was no fuel left (ran out of fuel)? which is why there was no fire. I shouldn`t speculate really.

I would never argue with the estimable 237SJ, except to say a helicopter can glide down… but… big but… the radius of landing sites is quite small. Additionally, the helicopter can "glide" down only if the main rotor is intact and still revolving. Helicopter pilots practice the maneuver incessantly in training and after…it's called autorotation… the steep descent is required to keep air pushing through the main rotor to keep it (the main rotor) up to speed so at the very last seconds before contacting the earth the "collective" control is pulled up to slow the descent and make a landing.

I'll take a Boeing 727 any time...

An aviation expert has said a fire would be unlikely because of the way the fuel tanks are designed to withstand a crash unless it flew head first into the building. He also said the helicopter may not have had enough room to glide to the ground.

Reports just coming in from Sky confirm at least 6 dead and that it is no longer a rescue operation but a recovery one.
Poor folk.

Looks like it was trying to get to it's base which is less than a mile away, also this is the 3rd helicopter Strathclyde Police have lost!
