So why do we continue to think we are the worlds Policeman, send our troops out everywhere, and fork out billions in aid, especially to countries that do not need it.
From the lips of the Chinese on the UK:
"just an old European country" that is only fit for studying and travel
There we have it Dave, so stop giving our money away, charity begins at home, particularly when you are a small insignificant country.
And at the same time change the WHS back to the NHS, kick out anyone who does not belong here and tell the EU where to go for their cash too.

intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries
How does looking after (and pay for) our own first become a fear or irrational dislike.
I dont dislike them, I just dont want to pay for them over our needy, eg pensioners and vulnerable.
Obviously you, rather callously in my opinion, would prefer to give to other countries (that often dont need it) first. Well I suppose you are entitled to your opinion.

Viv, great way to support your country, stating that it considers itself the worlds policeman, criticising our aid to other countries, insulting those who serve in our armed forces by suggesting that they're wasting their time (I'm not quite sure what YMB would rather they do - be the worlds policemen perhaps?) and lastly, plunging us into another, possibly irrevocable, recession by telling the EU where to go. Mmm. Not exactly my idea of 'support'.
I stand by what I said and Zacs you're wasting your time on me. I am sick and tired of my country being the conscience for the rest of the world. Young is right, charity begins at home. I would rather see our elderly kept warm in the winter and young families have enough money to put food on the table, and hey if that makes me 'xenophobic' or whatever in your eyes, believe, me I won't lose any sleep over it !
Chinese students represent by far the largest segment of foreign students studying at UK Universities.
That costs money and brings foreign earnings into the UK
We desperately need to earn money from China to help pay for all the things we want to buy that are made in China
So this is an interesting statement
Obviously it's been made with some political intent in negotiations but even then they are having to acknowlege the education market in the UK - shows you what a success it is.
From a quick look around figures like 50,000 are bandied about that's half a billion a year in tuition fees alone!
