Police baby names

I just heard on the news that police have found a new born baby in a phone box, and have named her Paula.

 

How do police and nurses come up with names for found babies?  Do they take it in turns or pull a name out of a hat?  Or do they have an alphabetical list that they work their way through, like with hurricances.

They usually name the baby after the officer that first came into contact with it. In this case it was probably PC Paul something or WPC Paula something.

I'd never thought about it Shipstabber, but it's certainly thought-provoking!  Loosehead - I like your answer and I'm sure it's accurate. 

I think I'd feel a bit wierd if I was the WPC, but maybe I'd be ok with it having my middle name - mainly cos that's a nicer name anyway!  Mind you - having another human being take your name, all be it temporarily perhaps, is a pretty big honour I suppose. 

Anyway - I don't suppose this was meant to spark chit chat - so I'll shut up now! :-)

I thought sometimes they took a name from something relavent to the situation,like holly or carol, if the child was found at christmas say..

There is no set rule to naming a baby found by the poilce and not claimed by anyone. In some cases the baby is handed over to social services without a name. In those rare cases that make it to the media and a photo opportunity is seen then the issue of a name comes up. In vast majority of cases, the social services take possession of the baby and find it a foster home.

i suppose when they run out of Mike Charlie Oscar Romeo Juliette and Victor they have to make up their own names 'cos calling a baby Whisky Zulu November is darn right cruel.

that should be,.....find the child a foster home.

baby, child, infant, little mite, can all be used without raising the question of whether the child is he or she.....
