Putin must have the best job in world politics: he took over at a time when there was a phalanx of business magnates (so called oligarchs) who were all vulnerable to the charge of the theft of state assets. So he gets them to siphon back some of their wealth to 'the state' - which in Russia's case is Kremlin plc headed by himself, thereby proclaiming himself a latter day Robin Hood. A select few with political ambitions, like Khodorkovsky, are dealt with by threats, followed by self-imposed exile or jail. Leaving himself and his people in total charge. Then of course there are always plenty of high-profile 'cases' where he can step in at appropriate moments, such as a month or so before an Olympics, and play Mother Merciful. He can't lose
