Nice to see some of our politicians are actually personally welcoming some of these latest immigrants on their arrival at the airport with a welcoming cup of coffee, all on expenses of course.

It reads as though it finds any foreigner worthy of comment (not British you know, Johnny Foreigner is a rum cove !), but it appeals to fears, even paranoia, about those other groups
Why would I accuse the DM of using a Mr. Vaz lookalike, AOG ? I just think it's a pity that the reporter forgot to ask him what he had found out by talking to the people coming in on that flight.
Then again, reporting that practically everyone on that flight was returning from a Christmas holiday in Romania to go to jobs they had held legally before leaving might have made even hardcore DM readers question the headline.

And you are foolish to believe that it is only the Daily Mail that reports on such issues?

Interesting to note that your left-wing press played down Vaz's personal greeting at the airport.
Incidentally why was he there, did he in the past also personally welcome all the other different immigrants to these shores?

Sorry I cannot provide a link as I cannot remember which paper I read this in earlier but in it Keith Vaz said something along the lines of he was just there to learn more - what drew people here, what were their intentions, etc. as having more insight into people's motivations can help identify the best ways to manage immigration.
from the BBC, i wasn't quite sure of the restrictions, so those returning to the UK are the following .......
Bulgarians and Romanians gained the right to visa-free travel to the UK in 2007, when their countries joined the EU. But there were temporary restrictions on the kind of jobs they could take. Employers had to apply for work permits and migrants for an "accession worker card". Low-skilled workers were restricted to existing quota schemes in the agricultural and food processing sectors. These restrictions were dropped on 1 January, having been extended to the maximum period of seven years.

So the Daily Mail only reports on immigrants, asylum seekers, and Muslims of any nationality, Johnny Foreigner, but not British you know.
Try reading the Daily Mail web site, instead of just criticising it, they report on all nationalities including white British and on matters even anti Tory ones, which is more than can be said for Left Wing papers who would never report on anti Labour matters.
I would have expected much more wisdom coming from a person who regularly sets himself up to be so intelligent.

The company I work for had plans to build a canteen on one of our sites. When they found out from our Security section they couldn't staff it with non UK born staff they pulled out of the project - no canteen going ahead.
When I hear the argument that immigrants do the jobs that Brits dont want this is only partially true; unless British born people are happy to live in cramped accommodation on a meagre lifestyle they're not accustomed to then they will never be competitive in the lower paid job market.
I dont question the legitimate motives of an immigrant workforce but is it fair to us to expect the social expectations of the UK to be lowered in an attempt to match the competition?

booldog, which is essentially, what i have thought and said.
that migrant workers will for a time put up with conditions that British won't, can't, and why should they, we are not a poor country, and have raised expectations as it should be, we are not some third world backwater
They may have family, rent, mortgage, how on earth do they expect some to do very menial low paid jobs if so, how much help will they get, not much if they have mortgages ?
Those who have never worked, except those with good reasons, i can't give an answer to that, it does seem shameful. The many on the dole may not always have been so, but become infirm, physically, mentally ill, there is no way to quantify the reasons someone is on the dole, and they won't for the umpteenth time not all going to be Brits.

If you study the demographics of the last two elections you will see that for Labour and it's patrons to take over the UK they need to either change the way the English think (you know all that stuff about being in the real, highly competitive world) or diluting electoral realism by allowing millions of grateful future Labour voters to flood in from all over Europe.
Labour need the former communist block people to come in and help them become an effective one party state- that being the masturbatory fantasy of all careerist politicians Left, Right or 'Centre'!

Emmie - I don't disagree that they are likely to be the most common motivations, but these things should not be assumed or the risk is you take action based on assumptions rather than reality.
Of course there is also that he knew the papers would be there and it would be a good publicity opportunity too.
