What a shame they did not point out that this was a religious pilgrimage to the shrine of St Demetrios and to the routes taken by the apostle Paul.
There are families round here that pull kids out for 4-6 weeks at a time for pilgrimages and nobody dare refuse their rights to practice their religion.

Send your kids to private school, different holidays so you can usually grab the past couple of cheapish rates. That's what I did.

mikey, you didn't make any comments on AOG's previous thread, did you even read them, i suspect not. Many seem to think its ok to take children out during term time, i don't, i think it's disruptive for them, not to mention if the family have more than one child at different schools,
we should have rules across the board, all schools, same term times, and no taking your children out of them during term time, they can go on holiday when the official school holidays are on, or pay the penalty from the school, and the mark up of increased fares by the airlines if they take them abroad. It must be hard for you to actually see that some aren't picking on one group because of their race, colour, but fairness, why should one set of parents be punished and not another, i find it strange that anyone should think that right.

Not half as irritating as you bringing this subject into almost every post.

Schools have always listened sympathetically to parents requests to take kids out of school in term time, for religious or cultural reasons. My two nieces went to a funeral in Ireland of an important relative a few years ago and we had no problem in securing the school's permission.

This couple just wanted to have an expensive beach holiday and they didn't ask permission first. Its going on all the time these days in Britain and I applaud the school and local authority for taking action.

all schools should have rules on taking children out during term time, it didn't happen whilst i was at school, the only grounds for time off would be a funeral or family crisis.

Em...in the link you posted 85% of the parents requested it and the time will be made up so there will be no disruption to their education. What is the problem with that?

I think usually not much is done the last two weeks of term time anyway ..I recall taking games and books as lessons were non existent...but permission needs to be asked..wouldn't dream of just going, although I know someone who produced sick notes from doc with some kind of malady to excuse attendance, but we'll enough to holiday !

My view - and also the view of our school - is that holidays in term time are wrong. If everyone did it then presumably the prices would just go up during term time. Not to mention the disruption to schooling.

Having a two week window in the summer would hardly help. Can you imagine the chaos? In fact shunting holidays about in general would hardly make a lot of difference. In Ireland schools have a whole 2 month summer break. In Ukraine it's 3 months (!)

Sounds like a good idea woofgang but we live in such small houses these days. Where would would you put the Physics Lab, the Chemistry Lab, the Biology Lab, the Language Lab, the gym, the playing fields, etc ?

Yes another case of the minorities suffering I'm afraid, now if they belonged to a majority Pakistani school, special provisions would surely have been made.

Er… no. Tour companies are businesses that supply a discretionary purchase. Nobody is forced to take a holiday. It is not essential for life. There is no justification for their regulation. The tour companies operate on a “supply and demand” basis. Their products are cheaper in term time because fewer people want them then. And I’m surprised that Prudie thinks that “…missing the odd week of school is really no big deal. “ I am entirely in agreement with Chris and I have posted my views many times before an AB. In particular the individuals concerned seem unable to consider the effect that their child’s absence has on the other pupils.

It is not appropriate to compare random absences with inset days and strike days. All pupils miss out on those days and individual catching up is not necessary.

Sorry, sherrardk, but when you have children you accept that you will be dictated to buy the government on a number of matters concerning them and their education. You may as well say they are dictating what time you have to get up each morning in order to get them to school.

It is not a new phenomenon for holiday companies to charge considerably more during school holidays. This (and other more fundamental changes to their lifestyles that will be required) are among the things that prospective parents need to consider before embarking on parenthood. But usually they don’t and so we see cases such as this.
