Whether you liked his political view or not he certainly had an impact on the nation from behind the scenes.

A young age for these days.

"He was made a director of the family firm at 21, five years after dropping out of top public school Stowe with three O-levels."
When the truth comes out, will the BBC get their "substantial damages" back?

Have just read this , what do you mean just Jude?
He certainly led an interesting life. Besides his work with the Conservative Party he became a zoo-keeper, ornithologist, explorer and jewellery maker and ran a B&B in Italy.
And Jude I suppose you are referring to the smears of child abuse? His accuser admitted he had the wrong man and McAlpine successfully sued those who smeared his name. So can you explain what truth you are talking about and why the BBC should get the damages money back?
"His accuser admitted he had the wrong man and McAlpine successfully sued those who smeared his name"

It was all a bit strange, that. His "accuser" claimed not to know who McAlpine was (and indeed it would have been odd if he had), but a policeman allegedly told him. So if McAlpine was innocent then he was stitched up by the police. And yet as far as I know this has never been followed through.
ladybirder, if Savile had been around to sue, he would have been successful as well!
I really wish he was still around Jude and then we'd see.
don't even wish for that, ladybirder. There are few people I'm delighted to see dead, but he's one of them.
I'm delighted he's dead as well jno but I would have liked to see him face justice. Oh how he must have laughed at us.
// [ Lord McApline ] stood down from the House of Lords to keep his non-domiciliary tax status, but retained his title. //

Ever the patriot.
// There are few people I'm delighted to see dead, but he's one of them. //

Why's that then jno?
I feel the same way about this as I did when I heard that Ronnie Biggs was dead. An old crook who had evaded justice for years is now dead.

Good riddance.

I posted this to see the reactions of the lefties, predictable as usual.

I always have more dignity than the lot of you put together, I would never slate the dead or be glad someone is dead, bar certain murderers etc.
YMB, i tend to agree with you on this.

I think jno's comment about being delighted he is dead refers to mass rapist/paedo/molester Jimmy Saville, not Lord McAlpine. It was clearly in reply to another poster who wished Saville was still alive.

Do you wish Saville were alive?

I agree with jno.
He was cleared & won £15k damages from Ms Bercow that McA donated to charity.

McAlpines are self made rags to riches thru building & construction; they built Heathrow/Motorways/infrastructure from 1950s. They came to Middx from Ireland as 'tinker labour' = hard work pays.
