Is this a new Danish zoo sport? another giraffe may be due for unnecessary slaughter at a second Danish zoo just because they got their breeding programme wrong. I'm sure lots of zoos across the world would love to take it (as they offered before) but I suspect this zoo will have hungry lions licking their lips already!!! Horrible.

This culling happens in every zoo and safari park, even here in the UK.
I don't understand why the zoos let these animals come into existence in the first place. Surely they know what the consequences will be when the animals mate?
It happens all the time, as we commented on on the thread about the original unwanted giraffe.
If giraffes didn't have big brown eyes, would we be as upset? I bet nobody complains when zoos cull warthogs.....

Bacon sarnie anyone?

veru naughty, Baldric.
How right you are QW as stated in my thread (don't worry, often multiple threads on here of same thing especially when emotive subject). Does seem like a new "zoo sport" doesn't it, which one can outdo the other. Of course there will be other zoos who will take the poor animal but as in the first case I can't see it happening though I hope it does. Advance warning of the slaughter if it takes place is probably done for publicity and apparently anyway publicity good or bad is ok today...

All it needs is for zoos to swap information and work things out, not that I agree with zoos at all but if they are there then more help between them would prevent this sort of thing happening.
Why can't they stop breeding giraffes in the first place and return the ones they do have back to Africa. Why are we keeping animals like giraffes in the zoo anyway ? They belong on the plains of Africa, not in bl00dy Denmark !
Exactly mikey, my bone of contention with zoos and wildlife parks anyway, but in this case seeing that the poor animal has been bred then they need to find it a new home rather than slaughter it. Hate zoos and the like and always have done.
I would complain if they were culling warthogs Nibble.
That is rather naive Mickey. You cannot return a captive animal, especially one bred in captivity, to teh wild. The lions would have it within hours ripping it to shreds as they killed it in a far worse fashion than the zoo.

Should they stop breeding then? maybe but then some other animal would have to die to feed the lions (or other mammal) or is that acceptable so long is it is ugly?

What I do disagree with is the manner they are going about it. Whilst I am all being children being aware of where food comes from and a believer that if you eat meat you should be able to butcher it I dont think making a spectacle of it is the right way to go.
You are right ymb...I didn't really think about that when I posted...I was just so bl00dy angry !

But the manner in which this young giraffe was killed and then butchered, in front of children was appalling. There is something seriously wrong when I zoo has to cull its own exhibits.
These Danes have got some neck.
I remember briefly glancing at images from a Chinese zoo where living cattle were driven into a lion enclosure. It seemed to be as much about entertaining the customers as it was to feed the lions.
The Danes are missing a great opportunity here to increase visitor numbers.
In some areas of Africa giraffe is farmed for meat (very tasty actually) - just as we farm cattle and sheep. Having said that, I'm not happy with animals in captivity being slaughtered like this.
