Sorry I cannot access the story but what I will say is I would not leave my child in a room with a dog regardless of the size for 5 seconds. That would include dogs I had known for 20 seconds or 20 years

I assume the councilor means 'come across anything like this' in their personal experience.

It doesn't say the dog attacked the baby, maybe it smothered it by lying down against it if it was a big dog ........ I could picture that, easily done I'm sure, if the baby was left on the floor on a changing mat for instance, after changing their nappy.

It's not the end of the world to always supervise your dog when near children. It is the end of someone's world if you don't and the worst happens.

The report advises that the couple had not had the dog for long.

It's another classic case of pack behaviour.

The dog arrives and is in the process of establishing itself in the pack hierarchy, suddenly another new member arrives and is obviously getting more attention than the dog - which equates to higher pack status.

The dog will be confused and unhappy, and react by re-asserting its rather tenuous position - and attack the interloper.

It was always a situation waiting to happen - you cannot introduce a dog into a family, and then a new baby before the dog has settled in.

Tragic, but predictable - again.

Apparently the dog chewed on the baby's head. Can't comprehend how the parents allowed the dog access to the baby without supervision. Dogs can be jealous. Did it think the baby was some sort of play thing? Who knows. And the parents have to live with this forever. Unfortunately the baby won't.

Yet another dog that people think oh don't they look nice. Owning a Malamute is not an easy task they need lots of excercise and the owner needs to establish themselves as alpha from the start. I don't regard it as a family pet type of dog and certainly wouldn't leave one alone in the presence of children let alone a baby.
