The papers today carry a story of a 'genius' spycatcher who infiltrated nazi sympathisers during the war. The story is interesting, as is its conclusion.

The sympathisers came from the aristocrisy and the establishment. And none of the traitors were ever prosecuted for helping the enemy, they remained free.

// He gathered information on the aristocracy, the military and the intellectual elite, with one sympathiser claiming to have influence over Herbert Morrison, the home secretary at the time.
He also shed light on the fascist plans of Sir Oswald Mosley and “Hitler worshippers” such as George Pitt-Rivers, Churchill’s cousin.

MI5 was unable to prosecute those involved for fear it would be accused of entrapment, and it was decided that telling the sympathisers they had been duped would push them further underground. //

Do you think they escaped jjustice because of their connections?

William Joyce was born on Herkimer Street in Brooklyn, New York, to an Anglican mother and an Irish Catholic father who had taken United States citizenship. A few years after his birth, the family returned to Galway, Ireland.

it was Diana who's second marriage was to Mosley, look where it was held and who was guest of honour.

Diana Mitford, The Hon. Lady Mosley (née Freeman-Mitford; 17 June 1910 – 11 August 2003) was one of Britain's noted Mitford sisters. She was married first to Bryan Walter Guinness, heir to the barony of Moyne, and secondly to Sir Oswald Mosley, 6th Baronet, of Ancoats, leader of the British Union of Fascists. Her second marriage, in 1936, took place at the home of Joseph Goebbels, with Adolf Hitler as guest of honour.
where does it say Nancy was a prominent Nazi sympathiser, she was in love with a Frenchman, though married, i couldn't find any reference that she was.
I think Eddie was confusing Nancy with Unity, Emmie. Nancy was a socialist, if memory serves.
And all of them were berks.
i didn't think she was, i knew about Diana, and that vile husband, i reckon that there were plenty of others, not the nobility who were pro Germany, fascists, right wing boot boys, who would happily have sold their souls to Herr Hitler.
more like confusing her with Diana. she seemed much more avid in her hatred of Britain.
It's not clear that Sir Oswald Mosley was guilty of any offence. He was careful not to do anything which would have amounted to treason. Internment was the best we could do.

On the other hand,William Joyce, "Lord Haw Haw" had a good case for an acquittal, but the British public and the judges were in no mind to let someone who had aided the enemy go free. He was never a person who owed allegiance to the King. He was not British. He did once acquire a British passport, but by fraudulent means; he was never entitled to the protection of the Crown; and that passport was , anyway, not operational at any material time. But the court held that in obtaining a passport, however achieved, meant he had had allegiance to, and had sought the protection of the Crown, at some point and that was sufficient.

Not giving support only issuing some facts, (although I did say British team rather than the English team) and disagreeing that Mosley should have been hanged, why even now some object to the thought of such savages as the Killers of Lee Rigby.
Fred - recollect that the ratio was he had travelled abroad (left UK) on his fraudulent British passport and was held therefore to have allegiance to His Late Majesty.

It was after Wm Joyce's execution that the rest of the trials were abandoned ( must have been by Attlee and not Churchill )

Having read the articles I am not surprised the then British authorities felt they couldnt proceed. "Jack King" pretended to be a Gestapo officer and was secretly checking their true German sympthies - I would be the first to try to run a defence of entrapment...

Do you mean the thought of hanging them?
rather strangely i switched the tv on a little while ago, showing Andrew Marr series The Making of Modern Britain, showing the anti fascists against Mosley and his black shirts marching, the police told Mosley that it wasn't wise to go a certain route, so they took a detour and came up against more opponents, resulting in the Battle of Cable Street. What followed was disgraceful, the police turned on the protesters, and laid into them, many were hurt, what happened to Moseley, nothing.

Andrew Marr said that the Kings abdication was a stroke of luck as it got rid of a weak man, who was also a Nazi Sympathiser, which if you look at it like that it was, quite what Edward saw in Wallace Simpson is anyone's guess.

Yes sorry it's been a long day.

I think that a few of us who are not in favour of the death penalty have had pause for thought after the Lee Rigby case.

/// spot on SP. I was referring to Edward VIII and his position with Hitler but you know AOG no thought and both feet. Mind you he was rattled when you mentioned his gospel, so on this occasion we will be forgiving ; ///

I know you are not the sharpest tool in the box, but i thought you would at least know what you put.

/// Any sign of Edward VIII "every drop of blood in my body is German" ///

You see, not a mention Edward VIII and his position with Hitler, more to do with his blood line being German, which was what I addressed.

Wow can we have it on record that you agree that for certain crimes we should bring back capital punishment?
