I too have first hand experience of living with a gambling addict (dad) and it's really not nice, Christmases were 'on a wing and a prayer', high days were fantastic, low not so much.
As a result I can't even enjoy a night at the dogs, or put a bet on when we've been to Ascot, I just don't see the fun in it.

I once bumped into an aquaintance in a shopping centre, he was spending like there was no tomorrow. Why ? because he had won a wedge on the geegees. He was buying stuff he didn't need with money he had temporarily reclaimed from the bookie, so that he could get back to being broke again I guess. There is no rationality to be found amongst gamblers.
The rich do all their gambling on the Stock Exchange and other high-value speculations (e.g.property).
But that's OK of course, above reproach (even when they go too far and the taxpayer has to bail them out).
It's the rich wot get the pleasure, and the poor wot get the blame.
It's the same the whole world over, ain't it all a bloomin' shame.
