Two large pieces of debris have been found by satellite imagery in the southern Indian Ocean claims the Australian PM.
One piece measures some 24 metres in length.
For the families sake I hope it leads to something tangible, if nothing else.

Out of the 25 or so different nations that this plane could have flown into the air space of, none of them have seen anything, despite having spent eye-watering amounts of money on defence systems and satellites. Something is seriously amiss here.
All these defence systems were designed not to track civilian aircraft but military armaments. But it now seems that all a rogue nation has to do is to hijack a scheduled airliner and it can do pretty well whatever it likes and nobody is going to any the wiser until that aircraft crashes into a capital city somewhere.
I hope to God that al-Qaeda hasn't been paying too close attention to the news this last 10 days.

People have becomes fixated on quick fixes. I blame shows like NCIS and CSI, where every fact is nailed down or positively identified by the magic of technology and science within the hour, each week.
We forget the size of the earth, physically speaking. We forget how much of the planet is hostile, or desolate, or simply empty of human infrastructure - difficult to get to. We forget just how limited is the search response - just the other day it was as little as 12 planes, eyeballing vast stretches of water and uninhabited land, searching areas as vast as the continent of Australia.
We forget that satellites are positioned for navigational purposes, GPS, broadcasting and military so are mostly positioned to see populated areas, not the more desolate regions.
And trying to fly and unscheduled, unexpected jet into the airspace of any developed country will be picked up pretty quickly, I think.
