Is legislation to reduce car engine emissions, which can only be good for our health, really draconian?
doesn't surprise me, when was the EU ever on the same side as Britain?
Question Author
I'm sure we are able to draft laws that are useful ourselves sandy, ones that are useful and practical. The problem with the EU they are not useful and practical to the UK (even that one).

And unfortunately that is one goodish one in a myriad of bad ones for us.
I sometimes wonder why we have that lot down at Westminster, when in reality we are in fact ruled by our European masters?
Yes, Youngman is quite right.

It is true that from time to time some decent legislation spews out of the EU. Supporters always cite the reduction in mobile phone roaming charges and the facilitation of budget air fares.

However, the majority of legislation imposes huge and unnecessary costs on UK’s businesses and nothing the EU has done could not have been achieved by the UK government. In the end it depends on whether you want your legislation framed by the UK government who only have the UK’s interests to consider or whether you’ d prefer it drafted by representatives - mainly unelected - from 28 nations who have wildly different views and certainly different priorities. I know what I’d prefer given the choice. But I don't suppose I'll ever be offered sucha choice.
Pity they dont list the "55 laws" That those goshdarned furriners at the EU have foisted upon good ole John Bull against his will.

Certainly I am all in favour of those measures on car emissions and air quality and much of the green legislation, that by inference from the article the British Government was keen not to implement.

Yay the EU, it would seem to me, and yah booh sucks to a commentary derived from a pressure group seeking to "renegotiate" the UKs position within the EU.

Draconian new laws - clean air.

Those evil EU bureaucrats making us not breath poison. The sooner we come out of Europe the sooner our children can go back to breathing excess fumes.

Mr Silver Cross should be ashamed putting his name to this.
I'munconvinced the roaming mobile charge reduction was that great anyway. Seems to me that for an international call there are a number of institutions having to do their bit and not being charities they all wanted paying anyway. Force the price down artificially and they can only cross subsidise and put it on elsewhere, onto folk who may not even be using the international call service. Calling from abroad ? Buy a local phone card.
We should set our own clean air laws. We have in the past and should be responsible for doing so where we think appropriate now. Yes imposition from elsewhere, folk involved should be ashamed of.
