many couples 'unconsciously' uncouple over time
it may be more common to use a term like 'drift apart' or 'grow apart'
the problems are suppressed and then there is a catalyst and a melt down of the relationship often accompanied by anger, resentment and a logistical mess.
they have (apparently) sat down, thought about and planned the separation calmly
That has got to be better for the children
Fair emough I say.
