Has Maria Miller Resigned Yet ?

Apparently even Tebbit has suggested that she resign. I realise that the whiff of brimstone doesn't have quite the effect it used to have, but I'm sure his opinion still has some weight attached to it. Never thought I would agree with the Chingford Skinhead but I can't quite see how dave is being helped in his task to get ahead of Labour in time for next years Election, until he lances this boil once and for all. I also understand, from what somebody was saying in the barbers this morning, that the DM have called for her to go.

Surely this can't go on ?

Its Kevin Barron - and why should he resign too? Do you mean along with all the committee, or because he has fiddled his expenses too, or because he is a Labour MP, or that by agreeing to a cut in the amount Ms.Miller needs to repay he becomes complicit in her misdeeds as well?

Okay- let's just call him Mr Barron.
I mentioned that he was a Labour MP just to show that it is wider than just a Tory party issue.
If she is expected to resign for paying back what the committee asked her to pay I think it's only fair for the Chair of the committee to be expected to resign too. And I hope the whole committee goes too.
I think Ms Miller should resign for several reasons.

I agree with factor, self regulation doesn't work. She is now a marked woman and should go.

the whole expenses business is wider than a Tory party affair and has been all along. Miller is in the spotlight because she holds high office, which means at the moment she is a Tory, that's all.

I think I'm right in saying that the most eye-catching claims came from Tories, but that's because only Tories have moats and duck islands. Austin Mitchell (Lab, Grimsby) was reduced to claiming for Branston pickle. (And a lot else besides, it must be said.)

To be clear- I do not favour self-regulation of MPs by MPs.The committee should be disbanded/repurposed, imo.

And I think everyone is perfectly well aware that the expenses scandal is a cross-party issue; Indeed I was pointing that out to some posters earlier who seemed to indicate it was an entirely Labour issue.

I must be tired though, because I cannot see quite why ff is calling for the Chair of the committee to resign as well as Ms. Miller over her expenses claims, over her repayments, over her actions, and over her rather cursory apology to the House. Why should the Chair of the judgement committee resign as well?

Now you could argue that maybe Mr. Barron should not be the Chair of the Committee for Standards, given his own record on expenses, and that has been raised in the press before now. And some of the other members on the committee might also be less than pure. If you mean he should resign or recuse himself for those reasons, ff, then I would probably agree with you.

Whilst I'm glad she's gone, she did repay what the committee felt it was appropriate she should repay. If her action in only repaying what she was asked (around £5K) rather than the £50-60K initially suggested is enough for her to have to resign then I think the committee chairman should also be being asked to resign.
However if the argument is that her mine 'crime' was failing to apologise properly (and it was pathetic apology) then I'm simply asking whether the chairman of the committee, who persists in saying they were right to slash her repayments, should be expected to resign too.
But I think this will follow anyway- I can't see how the committee can be allowed to continue

Well I suppose its good that she has eventually gone but why it took her so long, and why dave didn't show some leadership here is anybodys guess. It will be interesting to see what the Polls make of all this nonsense this weekend.

I agree- poor judgment by Cameron.
But I can see that it would also have been awkward for him to overrule or be seen to be disagreeing against the decision of the parliamentary committee that agreed to slash the amount she should repay

ff...difficult I agree but dave needs to up his profile and his action or lack of it, has just made him look weak and ineffectual. As I have already said, this wasn't really a party-political issue, as cheating and fraud is seen in all parties. But dave has shifted the attention on to himself, which is his fault.
PMQ's will be worth watching today !
