Is This Really A Leading News Story?

The first item, the lead story on today's The World at One on BBC radio 4, was that a football club manager had resigned. After hearing that and with the prospect of having to listen to the opinions of numerous people discussing this 'sensational' news I switched off my radio.

I wonder if there will be time to fit in any real news on today's programme?

BREAKING NEWS: Man Is Sacked

A man has lost his job because he wasn't very good at it.
Someone is now expected to take over from him.
The man will get another job after a suitable period of time has passed.

I didn't think the bird having the abortion was big news but that seems to be all that's talked about today at work; there's lots of stuff I don't think is newsworthy, doesn't mean that it isn't though.

No it isn't of course. But as I indicated before you could say that about a lot of leading stories.
A few years ago the BBC TV evening news led on the "story" that no non-league teams had been knocked out in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Now THAT was pushing it!!

The Korean ferry tragedy wouldn't have been headline news over here if the tv companies didn't have video of it; ferry accidents like that with the loss of hundreds of lives happen surprisingly often in the Far East and have done so for many years, yet most get no coverage at all over here. It's usually the news companies who decide what makes the headlines, not the events themselves.

To all others who think my question was not necessary - this was the lead story on a radio station that usually concentrates on more serious news. Not, as diddlydo says, The Sun.

Repeated often enough it gains importance in their wee world.

And my answer was that it is an important news story - not necessarily the most important, but then when is the main news item ever the "most important" Who's to say what the most important story is - as bibblebub says it's the news companies that decide, and the Moyes sacking was an important story - admittedly not meriing all the discussion given to it, but then you could say the same about lots of other stories. The dirty deed was done just in time for the 5Live phone-in, conveniently enough!

As said, "Who kicks the ball" Moyes advises / coaches the player's he can do no more, the club want's to start saying to the players, if you do not perform your money will drop, it does not matter if these "GODS" think they are good, it all comes down to the wage package whether they play or not they still get paid too much.

I thought that BBC News showed an appalling lack of judgement by leading the bulletins all day with this trivia. Aren't they supposed to be serious journalists?

The real news is MH 370 - they still cant find it
and the Korean Ferry - there are no survivors
Ukraine - - - - it is still being partitioned.

the two kids are having fun in Oz as the back story

and it makes a difference.
