Unlikely I think emmie.

But I see no reason why we cannot move one of the Easter days to St Georges day so there is no cost to the country.

In fact a St Georges Bank Holiday day could actually be good for the economy. Unless booze prices have been rammed through the roof to protect a few stupid people of course!
celebrate? What, like parades and things the way St Patrick's Day is celebrated? Or just by having an extra day off to spend in the pub, the true English traidtion?
Bank holidays mid week do not work.

Christmas and New year can fall on mid week but are bigger, worldwide events. St George's day would not fit in well in doing business with other markets. Going to work Monday and Tuesday and then being off Wednesday, then back to work Thursday and Friday would be very odd.

Then when St Georges' day fell on Saturday or Sunday it would feel like a bank holiday on those days were a bit of a non event.
Stuff St George's Day! I want a Europe Day holiday on 9th May each year!!!
have you never seen an Irishman in a pub on St Patrick's day, if not you have your eyes closed. They may have a parade, but the celebrations don't stop there. Having stayed in Dublin and a number of other parts of Ireland, i can testify to that
English Tradition, what's that.

The 9th May would be a nice time to have off.
The last thing we want is yet another bank holiday falling in March/April/May, they're too bunched up already. I'd like one in the autumn, maybe fireworks day!
^hmm 9th May, wonder if that's someone special's birthday?
an Indian Summer Day would be very nice, Prudie. It could be moved around so it fell whenever the weather was nice
9th May
wiki

Victory Day or 9 May marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the Second World War (also known as the Great Patriotic War in the Soviet Union). It was first inaugurated in the fifteen republics of the Soviet Union, following the signing of the surrender document late in the evening on 8 May 1945 (after midnight, thus on 9 May, by Moscow Time). The Soviet government announced the victory early on 9 May after the signing ceremony in Berlin
Surely the present government would want to get rid of the early May holiday - on the grounds that in most countries the equivalent is called Labour day

I`d scrap all of them except Christmas Day and NY Day and just have the rest as a personal entitlement to use when it suits me.
jno

/// an Indian Summer Day would be very nice, ///

Couldn't be called that, not in a multiracial country like ours.
I would have some sympathy for this idea if more than a handful of people were even aware that it is St Georges Day in the first place. Wouldn't we be better off celebrating VE Day, or maybe a day for Nelson ?

But an extra day off in June or July wouldn't go amiss, or maybe October perhaps. We enjoyed our extra Bank Holiday last year, in Wales, on April 17th but the momentum didn't carry on to this year unfortunately.

//for those types that like to wear the flag//

would you care to expand on your thoughts of those that wish to be patriotic?

Are we racists, little Englanders maybe even swivel-eyed loons perhaps?
No youngmafbog we are true blues who love their country and I would like a public holiday on St. Georges day the same as Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
