He got in the SH for using the word "slope" last month, now some mumblings may have sounded like the verbotten word. Someone got into hot water last year for using the entirely urelated word "niggardly". I think most are not racist, is it really necessary to leap on even the tiniest of slips/mistakes/misunderstandings ?

I may well think folk ought not to take offense especially as many try to justify it if a dark skinned individual, particularly comedians, use it, but they do. It was an ill chosen rhyme to use even if it is a well-known and innocently used one. Clarkson, I believe, deliberately opts not to follow convention of trying not to offend, but chooses to be controversial.
oh, and he did use the N word too. He says he tried to mumble it but didn't do it well enough.

The BBC pay him a lot of money. They don't do it so he can "obscure" offensive words. He should get his act together.

This constant treading on eggshells is potty. Until I read about the ‘slope’ incident I had no idea that the word is deemed offensive in some quarters – and the rhyme he chanted under his breath is one we used as children when we were trying to decide something. I doubt he even thought about it. Touchy people need to get over themselves.
That slope story was weird, wasn't it?
I mean, so many people said the same thing when the story broke - that they had no idea that it was a pejorative term for Asians.
I find it curious that Clarkson used the term at all, seeing as the majority (I assume) if his Top Gear audience wouldn't have gotten it.
Perhaps it was a bit of a joke between the production team, along the lines of "Let's see if we can slip this through..."
