When they're already in a safe country?

Whilst I may understand the plight of a few who may deserve asylum, are the French acting as a result of the Euro elections?

The French action is not as a result of the elections. It was planned some time ago. It was in the news that the immigrants' campsites are disease ridden (not surprisingly) and that action was going to be taken to clear them. I don't usually hold much of a brief for the French but the people of Calais have my sympathy. Until a few years ago it was a half decent town...

if they arrive here before being discovered then we'll deal with it. I'm talking about those in France already trying to get here anyway they can. They should apply in France, surely!
AOG, "Most of the world hates us..."
Surely not?
the French don't care, why do you think they are dismantling these camps, not just because they are ridden with disease, they want them gone from their shores.
actually i don't think most of the world hates us, that would be USA.
New Judge is right with his comment about what they say when interviewed. Most of the people I deal with say they came here as they felt 'england was safe' Lots have spend literally months travelling across many countries where they could have claimed asylum but they keep going until they get here. I think in a big % of their heads the word safe equates to knowing our system well enough to know they will be housed here after a short detention period, they will be given an amount of money weekly without having to sign on looking for work - as obviously they don't have permission to work, their heating bills are paid, and many of them even will work illegally to earn extra money and actually live with the famiies New Judge also mentioned while they rent their allocated accommodation out to the ones that made it over without getting caught and also work here illegally. There are of course genuine heartbreaking cases why people are here but all the same, all of them passed through other countries before getting here.

So my opinion on why they try to get into the UK? because they know the country is soft as ****

that and they also know that it takes years to bring an asylum case to finish. Appeal after appeal can be put in and the longer it takes, the longer you are here, which in turn means the longer you are here the more 'ties' you have to the country and the harder it is to deport....
if they have no documents how can you know who they are, where they came from
emmie

/// actually i don't think most of the world hates us, that would be USA. ///

And don't you think our 'special relationship' with the USA makes us all 'part and parcel'?
no i don't, our status is lapdog not worth bothering with. This special relationship only seems to work when they want something.
I'd like to ask retrocop how you get unentitled benefits?
@fender62 the ones that go through the system are photographed/fingerprinted and also given general health check but it would be hard for them to collect data as a lot give false names (which later they get backed up by 'evidence' paid for in corrupt police stations/courts) its also not easy to deport someone....
//its also not easy to deport someone.... //

do the authorities even try? I've heard that those who succeed in reaching Dover are merely patted on the head, given a train ticket to Croydon and told to report here:-
https://www.gov.uk/asylum-screening-centre

how many actually do?
no idea, but if they have no papers, no passport, no id of any kind, where can you send them back to.
"no idea, but if they have no papers, no passport, no id of any kind, where can you send them back to. "

FRANCE F_F_S or whatever country they boarded the boat in it's where they actualy arrived from on the ferry/Tunnel. Then it's a French problem!
Why is that so difficult to comprehend?

If they arrive directly from a non EU country and apply for asylum then we deal with it but we know that's almost no one.

divebuddy - What 'appropriate gas' would you suggest?

Sorry Methyl, but Germany was not suddenly over run with "foreigners", long established Jewish businesses and families and people that had considered themselves German, and fought for their country in WW1 ,were turned on. Not a fair comparison for now. We are a tiny country geographically,it is not racist or biased to ask for limitations. The old saying applies "you can't fit a pint into a quart pot".
methyl - Thanks for your informed comments and I promise not to engage the aforementioned again :-)
