I missed the begining of this, why did sir ranulph fiennes cut off the tips of his frost bitten fingers himself and not get it done properly,(and it wasn't as if he was up a mountain)and after all,he went later to get them tidied up?

story and, uh, photos here - sounds as if it was the other way round, he didn't cut them off till they were dead, and after he'd had them treated. I'm kinda sorry I looked this up, actually...
