//Thought we were having a referendum Dave?//

What makes you think we're not?

//the influential magazine [Der Spiegel] said Mr Cameron told Chancellor Merkel that selecting Mr Juncker could destabilise his government to such an extent that an in-out referendum on Britain's EU membership would have to be brought forward.//

What makes you think we are not, says naomi.? Because Cameron will not be in power in the year 2017 to allow it . the only chance he has got is allowing a referendum now.
thought we were having a referendum after the last election - now we might (haha) get one after the next lection. come on cammy, pull the other one it's got bells on.
what a prime minister!!
Farriercm, you know the referendum is planned for 2017, so if you think there's no chance of that happening, why the question? You've made yet another bloomer and you're backtracking. Nice try, but it doesn't work.

Naomi, calm down ,its Sunday, the day of rest.
Farriercm, your post implied that David Cameron has reneged on his pledge to hold a referendum – but that isn’t what was said here at all. If you intend to continue to take every opportunity to disingenuously disparage politicians and political parties you dislike at least get it right. Other people aren't stupid. We can all read.

Incidentally, I’m always calm. Have a happy Sunday. ;o)
// an in-out referendum on Britain's EU membership would have to be brought forward //

Does anyone actually believe that?

Cameron is full of hot air. There will be NO referendum this side of an election, and Merkle, Mr Juncker, and the British public knows that. The reason why voters are leaving the Conservatives and voting UKiP is because of the lies he constantly spins.
got more chance of ukip getting in the next election than our Dave letting us have a referendum
Gromit > voters are leaving the Conservatives and voting UKiP <

voters are not just leaving the toffs they are leaving labour and the libs to vote ukip

Europe once again tearing the Tory Party apart...history is repeating itself it would seem. John Major must be having a wry smile at this very moment !
They last said that the election outcome would help determine the next president of the commission. The EPP grouping is the major grouping (which Cameron pulled his MPs out of) so he lost his right to influence their choice (which ended up being Junkers). Now Cameron wants to ignore the earlier commitment to recognizing the election as influencing the choice. UK conservatives will be slaughtered in the next general election, irrespective of his claims regarding a referendum. Nobody believes that the other EU countries will make further concessions to the UK and nobody thinks either that the conservatives (the party of business) would really pull Britain out of a market of 500 million people (referendum or not). The party would split like Labour did in the 1980s with the formation of the SDP.
HOW CAMERON DOESN'T GET EUROPE:

The EU President is decided by the political group that gets the most MEPs in the EU Parliament. So if you want to influence who is President, you need to be in the biggest group. The Conservative's did belong to the biggest group, the centre right EPP until 2009. The Conservatives were in the most influential majority group. Then Cameton jumped ship and joined a minor grouping, with a quarter of the MEPs of the EPP and no influence. So there is no chance the Conservative's preferred candidate can win.

// In an effort to boost interest in the election and make the process more democratic, this year the seven political groups in the European Parliament have been asked to put forward candidates for the job. In theory, the group that wins the most seats will have their nominee anointed by the heads of state. //

Does anyone above the age of 2 believe anything politicians ever say?
There's no chance of the UK getting a referendum on the EU. Like all politicians wriggling out of everything they say, DC will find some way of backtracking. Count on it.........and that why nobody has any trust in him anymore.

Liars, cheats and rubbish, the lot of them, all in it for what they can get out of the EU gravy train.

Get real people.
