/// It is time to stop being ‘squeamish about Britishness’ and tell everyone who lives here that refusing to accept British laws and the British way of life is ‘not an option’, Mr Cameron argues. ///

But so as not to offend a certain group they still find a need to add this:

/// Downing Street stressed the Prime Minister’s comments, which come in an article in today’s Mail on Sunday, are aimed at all sections of the community, not just Muslims. ///

Well that's eases things a little doesn't it?

Here is the link to Cameron's piece in the MoS.

Bizarrely, it is the anniversary of Magna Carta which he thinks everyone should learn to be British. Unfortunately he does not seem to realuse Magna Carta is an English document, not a British one. And it is not written in English, but a foreign language. Ah well.

Downing Street had to issue the clarification of what the piece was about because the Mail themselves got it wrong.

Not sure Cameron should be telling everyone else to study Magna Carta. He famously did not know what the words meant when quizzed on the Letterman show.

Thank you Gromit for providing the link which in a rush I forgot to do, this is the one I took my excerpts from.

Please enlighten me to how the Mail got it wrong?

Politicians usually hope people will forget their gaffes.

The Mail got it wrong by headlining an accompanying article

// Be more British Cameron tells UK Muslims //

He didn't. If you read Camerons article, he is addressing EVERYONE. He does not single out muslims, he does not even mention them once

// The values I’m talking about – a belief in freedom, tolerance  of others, accepting personal and social responsibility, respecting and upholding the rule of law – are the things WE should try to live by every day.

They should help to ensure Britain not only brings together people from different countries, cultures and ethnicities, but also ensures that, together, we build a common home. //

if Eton boys don't know about Magna Carta, what hope have the rest of us got?
AOG, from your Mail link..

// After getting the composer of Rule Britannia wrong and being unable to translate Magna Carta, Mr Cameron confessed: 'I’m a history obsessive, so I’m sorry I didn’t do better.' //

Isn't it a bit rich, Cameron lecturing us on Magna Carta when he clearly doesn't know much about it himself?
Well he called it the Union flag instead of its now established name (that is, since 1908) of Union Jack. I reckon he's a foreigner...
He talks about Britishness but pushes Faith schools which are able to push non British values, as exposed recently in many of those schools.
Didn't Major do pretty much this exact same thing with "back to basics" or something. It's an easy button for politicians to push without actually doing anything.

Incidentally I'm getting very tired of the idea that tolerance, social responsibility are uniquely "our" values. These are not ideas that the West owns somehow, and it plays into the hands of bigots and tyrants in other parts of the world to suggest it. These are things which represent the best of humanity, not Britain or France or America or whoever happens to be speaking.
I thought that the schools investigated were not faith schools.

And here we can see comments that show the problem we have.

All too quick to score silly little political points on what is really a serious issue. I'm certainly no fan of the man but comments like 'Eton boys' shows politics of envy coming through. dis he actually choose to go to Eaton or was he told to go to a school like the rest of us?

YMB,

// I thought that the schools investigated were not faith schools. //

That is part of the problem in Birmingham. The schools are supposed to be secular, anf have adamedy or free school status. That means the Department of Education give private companies the money to run the school, and not the local authority. So a private company owned and run by muslims can offer to deliver a secular school, but in effect they don't. And the DofE does not properly check.

http://www.tauheedulschools.com/

// Tauheedul is a growing chain of aspirational schools which are delivering the highest standards for pupils from both faith backgrounds and none. Founded on a progressive Muslim ethos and promoting traditional British values... //
Does Magna Carta mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain?
DrFilth 18:09 Sunday - that is EXACTLY what me and my OH said (and my parents).
