The funny thing is, Russia is currently stealing gas from Southern Ukraine to keep Crimea going.
Anyway, I hope we've all moved away from British Gas whose parent company Centrica signed a deal with Gazprom a couple of years back. Strangely, the company was very reticent to discuss this with me, feigning "ignorance"
...oh and by the way they haven't paid because Russia hiked up the price unilaterally - not sure I'd want to pay my gas bill under those circumstances

ichkeria > oh and by the way they haven't paid because Russia hiked up the price unilaterally - not sure I'd want to pay my gas bill under those circumstances <

ichkeria when all the companies put the price up over here do we have a choice ?
// they haven't paid because Russia hiked up the price unilaterally //

That isn't true.
Gazprom (through the Russian Government) negociated a discounted rate for Ukraine, and a contact was signed in 2010. However, the Ukrainian side have consistently broken its side of the deal, and as a result, a clause in the contract that the discounted rate would discontinued has been evoked. It wasn't unilateral, it was in the conteact. The Ukrainians knew that failure to comply would result in the discounted rate being taken away, and it has.

There is a long history of disputes over the gas pipeline and prices. Ukraine consistantly steals gas intended for EU countries, and misses payments.
Think I meant 'invoked' not 'evoked' above :-)
Oh come on Gromit

Do you seriously, seriously believe that if Viktor Yaniukovych was still in power in Ukraine that this dispute would have arisen?
It was Yanukovch who was in power when all these "payment infringements" occurred and yet it is only now that Russia makes an issue of it.
"Ukraine consistantly steals gas intended for EU countries, and misses payments. "

You have proof of that do you? As I said earlier though it is the case that Russian forces have commandeered a gas outlet station in Kherson oblast and have been helping themselves to free gas for Crimea sine the annexation.

this is from 2009

> Valentin Zemlyansky, a spokesman for Ukraine's state gas company Naftogaz, told AFP news agency in Kiev that his country was "not stealing gas".

"We are removing gas for technical purposes, in order to ensure the transit of Russian exports," he said.

Naftogaz said earlier it was diverting some gas to maintain pressure in the pipeline network. <

sound like a friend of a friend who by-passes his leccy meter so that the meter does not wear out :-)
And of course the other thing is that Gazprom's asking price for the gas is now way, way over even the non-discounted price that was negotiated such that Ukraine, post-Maidan, faces the highest bills in Europe. A coincidence? I don't think so :-)

ichkeria i have to pay top price for my gas and leccy because i have to move i only got a discount by keeping up my regular payments and signing a contract
// Ukraine faces the highest bills in Europe. A coincidence? I don't think so //

Not a coincidence. Companies often reward good customers with favourable prices and terms. They offset that by charging awkward customers more. Ukraine had a favourable deal but didn't pay its bills. It is now getting the expensive tariff and it is its own fault.

// Gazprom ended its discount price for Ukraine, which was negotiated by former President Viktor Yanukovych last December, in April.

Before the discount was cancelled, Ukraine's gas bill was heavily reduced by Russia to $268 per 1,000 cubic metres.

The price is now $485.50 per 1,000 cubic metres, the highest in Europe. //

Really? We got a cheaper deal by binning British Gazprom
In any case comparisons between this situation and the one facing private consumers in the UK are misleading, because on the one hand we cannot "negotiate" deals with energy companies. On the other hand, we have the option to change supplier, one Ukraine does not - for the time being at least - have
Gromit - all well and good. But if you think this is not political you are very naïve. And I know you aren't that as you're plainly v intelligent :-)

I can't believe you typed that with a straight finger :-)
