Vaz managed to get an apology eventually !

But what was the cause of this fiasco and what will be done to make sure it doesn't happen again next year ? The answer to the first must be "the cuts" of course.

Why is it stupid to book a holiday just after Xmas, as many people do, when the brochures come out, for a trip in September and then find that when you come apply to renew your passport in May, 4 months before you set off for Gatwick, the Passport Office is in a complete shambles ? If it had been made clear by the Dept, in January, that they were going to *** things up so badly, people may very well have applied sooner. Their advice is that most applications should be turned around in 10 working days.

Have a look at the official website :::

https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/hm-passport-office/about

They are still giving the advice that a 99.5% of passports should be issued in 10 working days ! 99.5% is as near to 100% as makes no difference.

Renewing a passport is a simple clerical function and isn't rocket science. It requires clarks, sitting at desks, in an office, to complete the task, hardly a terribly difficult function. But the Passport Office has managed to completely cock this up. I repeat, that up until a few days ago, they were still saying "problem...what problems"
It's stupid because every year there's a backlog.

ummmm...you still appear to be in denial about the cause of the problem.

It isn't true that every year there is a huge, unmanageable backlog, just the ordinary, manageable one that everybody expects in the runup to the main vacation season. This year is exceptional because of the cuts, a fact that everybody else on here this morning have accepted.

The Home Secretary, the Prime Minister, and now the head of the Passport Office have accepted that there is a problem and apologised accordingly, albeit somewhat reluctantly. So at least they now appear to doing something about the situation. And how are they addressing the problem....
by spending more money, just what they were trying to avoid in the first place ! Complete fiasco.
Why did the politition s jump in and misled the public ?
Question Author
Politicians always try do that weecalf ! But this time they have been found out.

I urge you and anybody else to try to find the proceedings of yesterdays Select Committee...Keith Caz was excoriating !

But the backlog is much worse this year C+J...and that is the point.

But at least Mrs May has finally got orff her expensively coutured backside and and pulled her finger out, if that is not mixing metaphors too much !
It might be worse Mikey but people know it happens. You have 9 months to renew your passport. That fact doesn't change.
