What do people feel about this. I am in agreement that people should have the right to defend their property.

It's easy to say you'd give a burglar a lesson, but with the compo culture, perhaps we should phone our solicitor before doing that!

Isn't "reasonable force" the basic requirement? I think you'd be in trouble if you hospitalised some young scrote...

Also, a householder owes a duty of care towards anyone on his premises, burglars included. I recall seeing cases on record where a burglar has successfully sued where injured by dangerous equipment.
Totally agree with Chilldout.

But as I said earlier, he was never on my property, Officer.

EH,
Thanks for the endorsement.
You're just being daft, ana, if you disturb a burglar the chances are he/she will leg it.

I was told by a police officer, after being burgled, that had I woke up and used a weapon that I wouldn't have been prosecuted because I was female in the house on my own with children.

My burglar was a drug addict....
@ ummmm "You're just being daft, ana, if you disturb a burglar the chances are he/she will leg it."
not if i got hold of them 1st they wouldn't
Same.....
OK, you win. Let’s adopt a new law which says we can physically assault an intruder. For the benefit of those few burglars who can read, we should also update the Burglar’s Handbook.

SECTION 1
Procedure After Gaining Entry, Innit.
Forget the gear for now. All members of the household have the right to try and give you a beating, so your first priority is to remove this threat. Locate all members of the household and disable them. You can then proceed to collect swag at your leisure.

Sounds ridiculous? Think about it.
Defend their property. Yes, with what ever it takes.
I've thought about it. You are allowed to physically assault an intruder. Why are you arguing against it?
The problem is the intruder will already be so hi on adrenalin and fear pumping through his body,as you can imagine if he took you by surprise he will already be pumped up so you would be up against quite a power of force ,now it would be different if you took him by surprise and had a piece of 4x2 then you might stand a chance ,the other thing is that if the intruder is armed .different story I have no idea what I would so this is not like the movies.
Mr In A Mo

ummm, perhaps anax is a burglar!

I was thinking more a writer for True Detective............
Lol....could be :-)
Yes and nice in theory but I am not sure I'd be able to for a number of reasons.

Round here, machetes seem to be a popular weapon of choice, I'm disabled, female and on my own, against someone likely a lot bigger and stronger than me, prepared, possibly high on drugs, I don't think I'd stand a chance. Some round here have been gang related too
@ anaxcrosswords
burglar found in your house scenario anaxcrosswords!

you to burglar!"do sit down make yourself comfortable, would you like a cuppa and some cake before i show you round my house so you steal everything i have worked hard for oh by the way i have some cash in the drawer over there help yourself ok!"
uuuuh ?

what is the discussion on this ? you HAVE the right to defend your property....

do we think that having the right to defend property which we already have, is a Good Thing ? Yeah lots of us do.

Is it OK to take life in the defence of property ( R vMartin )
hmm, we could discuss that.

Mr Martin you recollect pepperred a burglar in the bottom, with a shotgun and so was disabled from saying he thought he was under attack and defending himself....
ummm the policeman gave you a correct statement of the law on self-defence. This is really defence of property
It's not though. You're defending the household and the people in it...
If someone comes to my home without my permission and with the intention to take my belongings away, then it's my choice how I deal with that person. Especially if my family is at risk then only one person will get out alive. Either me or him.
