If he did, he would probably have worked it out with a representative sample, like we do with most statistics. It's going to be very hard to measure, but about 4.8% of the general population are thought to be paedophiles, so he is probably underestimating by quite a lot.

I think you're right, jom. Having had a bit of a google, it is classed as a psychiatric condition. However, any condition that harms others is not accepted, so i don't think there'll be any marches!

It's still not known what percentage of the population is paedophiles but 2% is the consensus of the experts although some believe that many more are capable of being sexually aroused by children.

I can see no reason why the Catholic church should have a different percentage and I would say that the same percentage of people are paedophiles in every profession, trade and class of people.

However, I believe the Pope was referring to Catholic priests, rather than all Catholics.

That being the case, then the percentage of paedophiles actually *should* be different from the incidences of paedophillia in the general public, because the general public includes women.

And the numbers of female paedophiles is extremely low, compared to their male counterparts.
